Please help me organise SEO for new business

Hi all, haven't posted here in a while but knew this was the best place to ask a question like this.

I have decided to start a new business using my woodworking skills, I have built a new workshop, filled it with tools and want to turn my hobby into a small but successful money earner.

Over the years I have also had a fair bit of experience with making websites/SEO albeit a few years ago now and so want to combine the two skills.

I have identified two aspects of woodworking that I think I can make money with and I am trying to work out how to organise my web presence for both of them.

The first is a service that I will personally provide to people in my city. This will be to make and install bespoke fitted furniture, things like wardrobes and alcove cupboards. I used to be a carpenter know that the demand for this type of thing where I live is high.

The second part of the business would be to make and sell products online, things like wooden wall art and unusual, quirky bits of furniture. The idea being that when I'm not making cabinets to fit I can make more stuff to sell online so that there is no 'down time' in the workshop.

I'm in two minds as to how to arrange the website/s. On one hand I feel that having two separate sites would be better. Set one up as a super-optimised local services type site focusing on google local and using my address for this (I live right in the heart of the city). Competition is virtually non-existent and I don't think it will take much to get top spot for a keyword such as "built-in cupboards (city name). I would then create a second site selling online products using something like woocommerce/wordpress and lean heavily towards social media marketing using pinterest/instagram etc. This would just be a .co.uk domain with no google local address.

On the other hand I would like to just create one website that offered both the products and services, being predominantly a shop front but also somehow trying to rank for the keywords to sell my local services.

Which way do you think would be more powerful? Even thought the two things are a bit different they are still both very much in the woodworking/furniture niche and might benefit from combing forces. Or they may actually hinder each other by muddying the water so to speak?

I would appreciate your comments!

I would rather have one well organized site given, you will promote virtually the same stuff
not to mention it will take twice more time to promote and maintain 2 sites compare to 1.

I suggest to build one website with rich contents. Focus on the main keyword of your niche topic. Please pay attention to the onsite SEO and offsite SEO Rules while building your website for higher rank in google.

I agree with the others here. It takes a lot of time to create a fully functional website, regardless of where the market is. You could have a home page for each site and, depending on your host, you may be able to point the online people to one home page and the locals to another.

If you want to invest TWICE as much time and money into creating a second website, then go for it but I know that can cause problems. That's just my 2 cents worth.

I would say it will be very difficult to manage two different websites. Having one focusing on both products and service is a better and far good option.

Create your business website with good quality content. Doing SEO effectively will be very impactful for your business. You have to focus on the on-page Seo and the off-page Seo. For top ranking, SEO is the must.

    best of luck

  • I think your exercise is very beautiful. But simultaneously it seems difficult to run two web sites. If you have good quality of service then you will succeed. Because the business success depends on the quality of the product.

Personally I'd just stick to one site. You can still target locals with the physical part using Google and social media, just set up a separate shop page that caters for intl orders. There are more than enough examples online of people doing exactly this (ranking well and making bank) using only one site.

Think PC building/repairs (local repairs and intl parts shipping), see what other businesses are doing and mimic that. Don't have to be in your niche, just follow the winning (layout) strategy and go from there

I think you should learn your competitors first and then build strategy to be much better.
All starts with content you provide.
    Make it catchy.

Bad idea because eventually you'll try to do what they are doing but better
and end up look like a mirror instead of differentiate yourself by being unique.

          Actually it's very simple.
Imagine you are trying to adopt to your needs a dozen of totally useless leads.
How do you know "SEO Pros" know what they are doing in a first place?

If the same stuff they are pushing in their posts, then I promise you, game is over.
For me, examine what my competition is doing, turn 180 degrees and do opposite.
Believe it or not, it's working like a charm.

I guess you've already made a decision, just wanted to add my 2 cents. I've seen lots of websites offering services and selling products at the same time. The main thing is to wisely divide your website into 2 parts. Make sure you don't confuse both search engines and users.

From the user point of views, what you need is the 'services' link/button in your main menu...... and rest of the thing will introduce your skills....... so try writing tips based on your expertise.

Please make sure that the 'services' button should appear on all the pages of your website to get maximum exposure....

Apart from the 'services' button, there will be contact-us page that will be very helpful to your customers to find you on phone or email.

Also, spread your expertise on popular social media websites and please don't forget YouTube and reference of your website as well.

If you can handle chat, you can offer chat facility on your website so that the customer will be able to chat with you instantly.

I would like to suggest one site offering both services as you said you don't have any virtual competition in one task so if its keyword would rank it will get to know about your other services too.
In simple means, one service will provide the exposure to other.
So, this will be easy on efforts instead of driving both websites together for optimization.
Also, I would like to suggest you hire the best web development company for this project as you must be aware of an SEO optimized site since you mentioned already about your SEO knowledge.

My suggestion would that only go for two sites if you have good knowledge of website development and I suggest you to have a WordPress site because it's easy to set up.

For the SEO purposes, WordPress has lots of plugins like Yoast SEO. you can easily manage SEO for your on page seo.

    For off-page SEO
create high-quality backlinks and for creating high-quality backlinks:
    Do guest posting
    Do Social Bookmarking
    Create good Infographics
