So in this instance, I would run that site through ahrefs to find out who the ranking competitors are for the keywords you are trying to rank for.

After that, I would look at the backlinks that thos competitors have and determine how they were able to get those backlinks (forum, guest post, etc.)

Then you can simply just copy the way they got those backlinks. You wont be able to get them all, but if you can get a few from each competitor, that will definitely add up.
