Interesting idea...but one that seems to be open to abuse.

"Google is preparing to roll out a new feature that will allow users to leave comments on search results."

Unfortunately, abuse is the only thing that came to my mind. But I hope all these likes/dislikes won't be considered.

It is really a great thing. But people definitely use this for SEO purpose.

This is a feature that Google said that they are only rolling out for live sports results. As usual, the SEO community has jumped the gun and is speculating about it being used ALL OVER the web for every kind of search. Talk about a spam magnet!

It is very good to see comments in SERPs and I think it gives more ideas as viewers comments on search related and Google can solve it.

Man, I go to the trouble to point out that this is something they are ONLY DOING FOR SPORTS SCORES, yet people continue to comment about what a disaster it's going to be. Amazing ...

It's not even like it is all that new. Google rolled this out many months ago during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, allowing searchers to comment on the games during the matches.

I guess its because the source indicates it might NOT be just sports

"You can leave comments on things you've searched for on Google, like a sports game. You can also read and rate comments left by others."

True this doesn't make sense for search and spam but it makes some sense for Google's social desires. Its a real nice way to leverage their search engine dominance and funnel that traffic into social interaction that leads back to their social platform.

Maybe I don't understand what you are referring to. Google is shutting down their social platform.

I guess it's because of the way article on SEJ is written. If it said: "Google added comments for sports events", no one would care. But when the title screams "Google to Let Users Leave Comments on Search Results", it gets much more attention. Typical clickbait I'd say.

To be honest here, there is no real benefit or even a point for allowing comments on search engine results. As someone rightly pointed out, it is definitely going to be a mess. A huge one for that matter. People are ruthless when commenting and this is going to leave the Search Engine Result Page crowded and unpleasant to the eye. Not to mention, it is going to attract a huge amount of spam as well.
    Let's see what happens.

Yes I heard about that but for leaving a comment you need to be registered. currently it is active for live cricket matches, events and sports. so that users can share their view on the time. And for static websites that will roll out later.

"And for static websites that will roll out later" is just speculation (i.e. the SEO community doing what they always do - panicking about something that they guess MIGHT happen sometime in the future).

Google has not said that they will be doing this for ALL search results. In fact, I highly doubt that they will. They'll find out very quickly that this just junks up their SERPs (just like they did with the 300 character meta descriptions).

Apparently, this industry never learned the story of "Chicken Little" or "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" when they were kids.

I seemed to have missed this in the posts above...can you point out where anyone said or even hinted that people were "panicking"?

I made the OP because I thought it was interesting and things could easily go wrong. And I hoped we could possibly discuss how as marketers we may be able to benefit from this.

While it's only for sports results for now, this may change in the future or it may go away entirely. My guess is, Google will drop it like they have many of their other ideas, as I see more problems than benefits...but I could be wrong. Either way, I don't see anything to "panic" over.

Perhaps "panic" is the wrong word. How about "making a mountain out of a molehill"? As you now say, you are trying to get people to talk about what MIGHT happen if they expand it to other things and how marketers might benefit from it. (Although, your original post did not say anything about it being beneficial ... I believe the words "open to abuse" were the only things you offered).

Why? Don't you have enough things to worry about that you need to invent potential problems, solutions and benefits regarding something Google has never said that they intend to do?

I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just wondering what the point is in speculating about "what ifs"? I mean, you could populate the forum with dozens of "what if" threads every day.

They did this several years ago (about 9 I think), with a thing called Google sidebar. It all ended in tears.
