Internal pages ranking over the homepage: How to optimise to rank better at Google?

Hi,

We have experienced a shift in SERP from internal pages ranking over website homepage for more than a year. Previously website homepages used to rank for the primary keywords. Now we can see that internal pages like website.com/what-is-primary-keyword been ranking for the primary keyword . Google is picking up these "what is primary keyword" pages than the homepage. All our competitor sites are ranking with these internal pages which are about "what is (primary keyword)". We do have the same internal pages "what is....", but this pages is not ranking; only our homepage is ranking. Moreover we dropped more than 15 positions after this shift in SERP. How to diagnose this?

Thanks

You may have similar "what is" pages to the sites that are ranking better but they obviously have something about their pages that is better than your internal "what is" pages.

Try to figure out what they all have in common that your page does not have. It could be anything from better written content, to more helpful content for a specific query, to better on-page SEO, to more links to the actual pages, to use and location of not only the keywords, but related keyword phrases (or overuse of the same).

    Hi Michael,

    As far as internal pages:

    - how in-depth is the content?
    - how many backlinks do you have to internal pages?
    - are these pages SEO friendly as far as META stuff, links in, etc?

you can compare what you're missing in your pages what others are doing and replicate that. make sure you have more backlinks for your home page rather than on internal pages.

Beside homepage and "what is..." pages, if there is any duplicate content across any other different pages; will it results to this situation?
