These links may take the form of covalent bonds or ionic bonds and the polymers can be either synthetic polymers or natural polymers (such as proteins). In polymer chemistry "cross-linking" usually refers to the use of cross-links to promote a change in the polymers' physical properties.

      To add to that.. STDs.

The real question is can you catch a STD from cross linking all over the web. Yes, I think its possible.

Cross linking used to be a black/gray hat strategy employed by SEOs that worked quite well pre-Penguin. In essence, site A links to site B which links to site C which links to site A and all three sites are often owned by the same person or are part of a large group co-op of cross linkers.

Google is much better at discovering these link schemes now - they always have footprints. Besides, there is no way to scale this type of thing - you spend three times as much work trying to write decent content and get backlinks for all three sites so that the cross linking accomplishes anything. It might work temporarily until the strategy is discovered and then all that work is worthless or worse, it gets you penalized.
