What are the challenges and cons for having similar site name from SEO view?

We are going to select the new domain name that example.com.au. But we found that there is a website example.com already exist.

Can anyone recommend the challenges and cons for having similar site name from SEO view. How it can affect the SEO activities etc.

    The biggest challenge would be trademark issues. Have you researched that?



    Being accused of trademark infringement can be an expensive proposition - even if you win in the end.

    The biggest issue is that returning visitors/customers will always remember your site as a .com domain name and will not remember yours as .com.au. You'll end up losing a lot of repeat customers and referrals to your competitor with the.com domain name.

    As far as SEO does, it doesn't matter at all.
