High number of excluded (not indexed) pages in Google Search Console

Hi. Today I checked GSC after a while and I noticed a very high number of excluded pages. Not only that, the number of valid pages was more or less constant, but then suddenly the number dropped significantly and the number of excluded pages rose significantly.

Please see the GSC report here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BSI...ew?usp=sharing

I'm running an ecom shop on Shopify. The excluded pages are normal product pages.

Any idea what could be the issue?

Thanks.

You can use the "url inspection" option in the sidebar (of Google console) to get an idea of why it's not indexed, then you'll also see a "request index" button should there be no issues.

Sometimes it can happen if there are duplicate pages, where they'll deindex the lot of them incl the original, but there are many possible reasons.

May be slow crawling from Google bots.

Thanks for your help. I need to learn more about GSC. I totally missed the "URL Inspection" option.

I have a lot of duplicate pages - each of my products has at least 3 color variants, so I guess Google sees them as duplicates. Also, Google has probably decided to use a canonical variant for each page and just ignores the rest.

However, the number of valid pages has risen again and is higher than ever before.

  • Well the image clearly says "Discovered, Crawled - Currently not indexed"

So not to worry since they can be indexed and will be done soon. Just slow indexing from google side or it doesnt thinks the pages are that important right now.

exactly as a Ettienne mentioned sometimes it happens and even we who have a lot of experience with SEO have no idea..
most probably it happened because pages were duplicated

Any way to fix this? Or I should just leave everything as it is. I'm getting no errors, tho.

Some quick tips and checks for indexing issues.

Make sure your robots.txt file isn't setup wrong, that way you inadvertently stop Google's bots from crawling and indexing your site. Check for noindex and noindex, nofollow in your meta tags. Don't duplicate your own or someone else's content - this can land you in Google jail (get you a google penalty). Always write for your customers first, and search engine second. If you don't want to wait for Google to index your pages, use Webmaster tools to index them.

    • check your sitemap
    • check the robot.txt file
    • check any crawl error in search console
    • check any related redirect command in htacces or your server configuration.
