Seo does it really matter anymore

I have been told over the many years I have been doing IM that SEO is important and still think it is however over the last 3 or 4 I often wonder does it. So many times I read what Google wants in a web site yet see sites on page 1 position 1 that doesn't seem to show many if any of the things google says it wants whats.

One of the last things I remember Google saying was important to them was long articles, fine but how do so many sites homepages have no articles at all and are on page 1 position 1 with nothing but a picture.

We are told about keywords and see sites at P1 P1 that don't have the keyword I type in to my search. The keyword I am looking for isn't in the article on the home page or when looking at the page source isn't even listed with the sites listed keywords. So why is it even showing in a search for that keyword

I know as marketers we know Google is the big gun but how are we supposed to be able to keep our sites high in the search if Google doesn't seem to follow what they want us to do to our sites.

What kind of keyword are you talking about here? I barely see homepage ranking for any keyword I have targetted unless it provides the results that the user wants.

Google isnt stupid to show crap to its users it will only provide the relevant and worthy information.

lmao, search results are still full of shitty 2000s sites that load 10+ seconds, use keyword stuffing, have shitty backlinks etc. In 70% of cases when I google something I need, the first 10 sites have the same content which was rewritten and slightly changed. Do you call it relevant and worthy information?

Yes you are correct about the part that the information is rewritten and slightly changed but about those crappy websites, they do not survive long on those positions and get taken down.

  • Hi,
Site rank depends on keyword selection, if you have chosen the correct keyword and matches your site content, then you can rank your site easily. SEO helps to get organic traffic and Google also give preference to those sites that get traffic using White Hat SEO methods. SEO still have priority in ranking any site.

I think SEO and marketing are tightly integrated now, you pay for a website or create it yourself and leave that way you wont to earn any money, the people investing in SEO and Marketing will do better unless you have something that's different or so much better than whats out there already. SEO still plays a crucial role to boost online sales and increase business profit. SEO is relevant so long as people use search engines.

Lots of pages rank for keywords that do not show up anywhere on the page. Google has gotten very good at understanding language and semantics. They are better at understanding what a page is about without being explicitly told what it is about. That's a good thing.

SEO matters if you want to rely on search traffic.

If not, you can simply create helpful content and build bonds with top folks in your niche, to expand your reach. Your decision. I do little search traffic and virtually zero SEO but patiently built up my blog content supply and friend network; works for me.

You bring up a lot of interesting points and analogies, that could have easily been said a year ago, 5 years ago or 15 years ago.
So asking about 'matter anymore' - well the answer is YES, for some, but no for others.
It all depends on your strategy, the one that works best for you.
Organic SEO still works. Paid SEM still works. Social search works. And many many other marketing strategies work as well (affiliates, referrals, blogging, PPC, on and on and on).
    Two things I would say.
SEO is important if you are playing the long game.
    and
SEO is easier in a micro-climate - at the end of the long tail

I do agree with that, Google sometimes fetch irrelevant results but they are irrelevant because we want something else, something more specific , more detailed. But for many others the results are relevant that' why they are appearing in the search results.
Google is smart and is able to satisfy a huge mass. Google updates are constantly released so that it can give more accurate and relevant results.

That is the dumbest thing I have read this week.

Google should be sued? Like it's their fault every other search engine sucks so people continue to use them instead.

There are SO many factors that go into SERPS that it's false to see a site that doesn't have the keyword or long form content and automatically think Google doesn't know what it's doing. SEO is extremely important now. If you are doing it right, playing the long game, staying white hat, and working your butt off, you will have strong rankings. It's a competitive market and playing by the rules is tough. Some spammy, low quality sites may be still lurking around, but they won't be for long so I would absolutely put your money on SEO if you're running an online business.

I would say that SEO is important for your website - but not vital!

If you are focusing on SEO as your main tool for bringing traffic to your site then you are going to have to spend a lot of time on things like keyword research and optimising your pages for these keywords. You'll also have to spend time building backlinks unless you are targeting either specific local keywords, very obscure ones, or very long-tail ones.

You also have to think medium-long term. You are talking months-years before getting ranked in search engines.

Alternatively you could spend a lot of money and get someone to do it for you.

Dont be tempted by black-hat or spammy SEO. Any short-term gains will be cancelled out by long-term punishment from Google.

I'd say have SEO as a part of your traffic strategy but not the main focus of it. As your business grows then the SEO tends to come a bit easier.

In its simplest form, SEO is about making a search engine's job easier to find your website, understand the content of your website and score your website in terms of popularity and relevance. This can be achieved through many different activities including technical changes, website content, PR, UX and providing the best product and service out there.

SEO definitely matters. Always did, always will. But no it's not long-form articles that rank. You need quality backlinks which is one of the most important rankings factors and it's much easier to get links on longer articles than a 300-word article.

SEO is important if you want to get organic and targeted traffic to your website without paying for it.

Unfortunately it takes time and you have to work with Google's ever changing updates. That's just the way it is, but if you learn the basics and implement SEO for specific keywords then you should be able to rank your websites well in the search engines over time.

However, there are other ways of getting traffic to your website via social media etc. and that may be an alternative to getting traffic yo your sites without paying for it.

You keep creating awesome and relevant content and optimize it for keywords and Intent you will definitely be rewarded. You also need to have an analytical approach in your seo and keep doing the basics right. Like make sure you have an optimized title with your focus keywords.
