Hi

If you want to build links to rank for a particular competitive keyword, will branded and generic anchor still help in ranking for that particular target keyword, or should the majority of the links be exact match and phrase match?

Thanks

Try to avoid exact as much as possible since in long run that can be a problematic thing for you.
Better to go for branded or generic anchors.

Thanks! But will branded and generic anchors still help you rank for the target keyword even though the target keyword isn't in the anchor text?

Yes it will. Google's algorithm is far more complex than it used to be. Anchor text is a minimal ranking factor (if at all) these days. Far more important is how important the site is that is linking to your page, whether or not they are relevant for your niche and how good the content is on the page that is being linked to.

    Naked Links: 20%
    Generic Anchors: 5%
    LSI, Partial Match Anchors: 1-5%

To have branded and generic keywords is a must not to be penalized. But it's also a must to have exact keyword backlinks. How many? Take a look to the competence backlink profile.

It's also a good idea to user internal linking with exact keywords.

That is absolutely terrible advice. You should not be using branded and naked URL anchors for 90% of your links. That is just absolutely stupid.

Use descriptive anchors. Use anchors that tell visitors and search engines what the page you are linking to is about or why you are linking to it. Do that and you will be fine.

Totally agree. I've never consciously thought about the anchor text I've used for a link. It is what it is and has never seemed to hurt (or help) rankings one way or the other - at least not for a very long time.

In different niche anchor ratio is different.... for money terms it should be more but we need to take a balance approach. We need to take below anchor variations

    1. Brand Name + Keywords
    2. Natural (Click here, Visit us, know more)
    3. Naked URL
    4. Keywords
    5. Long tail keywords
    6. Keywords - Brand Name

These type of anchors will help in long term and will keep your website at top.
