High search engine rank, but low traffic

Hi,

I have a website that is ranked as the number 10 result on Google.com and as number 1 on Google.co.uk for its target keyword. However, quite amazingly, the site only gets 241 visits a month. How is that possible?

I can see if people clicked through, decided that it wasn't worth their time, and bounced, but why aren't they visiting it in the first place?

Position 10 will only get about 1-3% or less of the search traffic.

Ranking #1 doesn't matter if it is a term very few people search for.

I totally disagree with your first point "Position 10 will only get about 1-3% or less of the search traffic"
I have a site which ranked 12 and getting very good traffic.

      • Or you might have missed that some of the keywords (LSI) are ranking #1. Because ranking 12 will never get you suitable traffic. One or two clicks are understandable.

Perhaps, those keywords you ranked on, have low monthly search volume? check Google Keyword Planner, see estimated monthly traffic from those keywords.

What's the search volume of the term. Ranking on 1st position of Google for a low traffic keyword will not bring good traffic. However, in SEO the good thing is that in SEO website achieves rankings for too many keywords.

This situation is coming up with many peoples & they are really shocked to see this as they are on Top Rank but still getting low visits.

I have the same issue before 4 months & hardly I came to know, The Keywords those I'm targeting are low search volume & that was just a valid reason.

So I changed my keywords & found the high search volume keywords. So there is also one big thing which is missing.

I would just rank for more words, in my niche. Then big or small traffic, you progressively drive more and more targeted traffic to your blog.

  • Hi,

I also want to suggest that try to change keywords.

Think like a customer and choose keywords as per that. It will let customers to see your site URL on the Google search engine list.

    • Absolutely. Always ask yourself: "If I were searching for something earlier, how would I go about searching and/or comparing this issue?" Sometimes the best way to go about things is to just trade perspectives.

Just because you rank 10th using a certain keyword doesn't mean high traffic volume. I would suggest trying out a different keyword.

The keyword you're targeting probably has low searches. Try to target more related
keywords in the same article and build some good quality links to it. Targeting more keywords and building quality links will improve your scope of ranking all over the world.

PS - Do not forget you must have a convincing Title and Description inorder to have high CTR.

  • Hi,
Some reasons regarding these problems are:
1.Might be you are targeting wrong keywords
    2. Try to understand user intent means what they are searching for
    3. Check your listing appearance on SERPs
    4. Improve your website content and brand/service description

    Hi,
In such a scenario, you need to choose high search volume keywords and rank your website in the top 5 positions of Google's SERPs. Use Google's Keyword Planner tool to find search volume of any keywords.

Well, you may be on the top 10 of your keyword. But it is to be kept in mind if the keyword itself is worth of traffic generation.
As per my opinion i think this factor is the answer to your query.

You even probably ranked for that keyword only because it's easy and not that worthy let's say. Is it some commercial keyword or so ? Let us know your full URL and keyword if you want some help and solid advice, unlikely there are many of your direct competitors.

What about your competitor's analysis? where they get traffic from? what about your google analytic? I think you should keep concentrate on these things. And make a better marketing new strategy.
Sometimes it's possible to get rank the first page on Google with less traffic. I think you got sound knowledge about technical SEO as well.

Take a look at your Title & description tags. Is your copy compelling? Are you enticing users to click?

Take a look at some Google Ads in your niche to get an understanding of phrases to use in your title tag.

Also, try updating the dates on the serp if it's a blog post or article. Use "Last Updated" to keep the content fresher. Or you can just update the date and republish the content.

Send me a PM and I'd be happy to take a look at your site.

  • You need context. Others have asked what's the search volume. Just because you're on top, doesn't mean a million visitors, it all depends on how many people are searching on the keywords you are ranking for.

Some are saying you are using the wrong keywords. They are wrong. None of us know if you are or not because we don't know anything about your site and your business.

Others are saying to target higher volume keywords. Again, they are wrong. It's not about the higher search volume keywords - which will be more difficult to do - it's targeting the correct ones for your business. It just doesn't matter what the volume is. If it's the correct ones that are likely to lead to your most wanted action (signup, download, sale), they are going to be your winners and make you a good return. These are the ones to concentrate on, not the higher volume ones.

If you can't convert on your primary (most times lower volume) keywords, it won't matter on anything else. You first need to prove that the strategy is sound. Then maybe try for the higher volume keywords but usually the cost is not worth it. There's a reason primary keywords are primary, the secondary and tertiary keywords are too broad and generic leading to just traffic, if you can rank high enough for them.

As pointed out by others, there's a big difference between 1st and 10th position. As you go down, the click rate also goes down. But even in first you may get a 25% rate, never 100%, and probably most will get just 10%. If you're in 10th position, you may get lucky with a 1% rate. Tenth by the way is on the edge between first and second page for most people so being there you may miss out on exposure as your rank teeters between the first and second page.

You say you got 241 visits in a month. What were you expecting? I don't know the volume and you're between 1st and 10th but seems a good start and something to build on.

I think you have chosen the low competition and very low volume search keyword. So it is better to change the keyword which has high volume searches. It doesn't matter whether your keyword is in 1st page 1st position or 10th position.

In this case, the keywords that your website is ranking for might have less traffic. I would suggest using RankWatch Keyword Research tool, Google Keyword Planner, Google Trends, Ubersuggest or some other free tool to observe monthly search traffic on those keywords for which you are ranking. That data will also help you know the areas that require more focus and upgrade your strategy.
