Hi,

I have a website that is ranked as the number 10 result on Google.com and as number 1 on Google.co.uk for its target keyword. However, quite amazingly, the site only gets 241 visits a month. How is that possible?

I can see if people clicked through, decided that it wasn't worth their time, and bounced, but why aren't they visiting it in the first place?

Position 10 will only get about 1-3% or less of the search traffic.

Ranking #1 doesn't matter if it is a term very few people search for.

      • Or you might have missed that some of the keywords (LSI) are ranking #1. Because ranking 12 will never get you suitable traffic. One or two clicks are understandable.

This situation is coming up with many peoples & they are really shocked to see this as they are on Top Rank but still getting low visits.

I have the same issue before 4 months & hardly I came to know, The Keywords those I'm targeting are low search volume & that was just a valid reason.

So I changed my keywords & found the high search volume keywords. So there is also one big thing which is missing.

Take a look at some Google Ads in your niche to get an understanding of phrases to use in your title tag.

Also, try updating the dates on the serp if it's a blog post or article. Use "Last Updated" to keep the content fresher. Or you can just update the date and republish the content.

You need context. Others have asked what's the search volume. Just because you're on top, doesn't mean a million visitors, it all depends on how many people are searching on the keywords you are ranking for.

Some are saying you are using the wrong keywords. They are wrong. None of us know if you are or not because we don't know anything about your site and your business.

Others are saying to target higher volume keywords. Again, they are wrong. It's not about the higher search volume keywords - which will be more difficult to do - it's targeting the correct ones for your business. It just doesn't matter what the volume is. If it's the correct ones that are likely to lead to your most wanted action (signup, download, sale), they are going to be your winners and make you a good return. These are the ones to concentrate on, not the higher volume ones.

If you can't convert on your primary (most times lower volume) keywords, it won't matter on anything else. You first need to prove that the strategy is sound. Then maybe try for the higher volume keywords but usually the cost is not worth it. There's a reason primary keywords are primary, the secondary and tertiary keywords are too broad and generic leading to just traffic, if you can rank high enough for them.

As pointed out by others, there's a big difference between 1st and 10th position. As you go down, the click rate also goes down. But even in first you may get a 25% rate, never 100%, and probably most will get just 10%. If you're in 10th position, you may get lucky with a 1% rate. Tenth by the way is on the edge between first and second page for most people so being there you may miss out on exposure as your rank teeters between the first and second page.

You say you got 241 visits in a month. What were you expecting? I don't know the volume and you're between 1st and 10th but seems a good start and something to build on.

I think it currently happens like that to many site owners since most people do a lot of White Hat SEO to get to top ranks. If you've stuffed keywords or your content is poor, you are not likely to sustain even the little traffic that comes your way. That may not be the case with your site, but I simply mean that ranking top doesnt necessarily guarantee you traffic. You could be ranking for less searched keywords

A majority of the information given here informs you that only a few hundred people click per month because you are at the bottom of the pile for a low volume keyword.

Those seem to cover the answer, so you'd aim to achieve the opposite of both aspects.

OP, your situation is NOT SURPRISING at all.

You picked a LOW SEARCH volume keyword traffic

This may also partly explain why you ranked so well-the keyword doesn't have enough traffic to COMPETE OVER

The good news? Some keywords have low search volume but this doesn't necessarily mean people won't PAY GOOD MONEY for goods and services related to those keywords...

Example: GOLD IRA search volumes are not all that high but affiliate programs in that niche pay some of the FATTEST PAYOUTS in the IM industry

Don't let low search volume throw you off... FOCUS ON CONVERSIONS AND R.O.E. instead

If you are getting low traffic from your targeted keyword, the reason could be the low search volume with low competition for that particular keyword. Get the search volume for the targeted keyword from Google Keywords Planner. If the volume is low, better select other relevant keyword that has high search volume and a low or medium competition. Low or medium competitive keywords get high spots in Google search engine result pages in less time compared to high competitive keywords.
