Can a backlink from web 2.0 subdomain possibly penalize my money site?

Hi, let's say I get a backlink from a web 2.0 subdomain. From my understanding, Google treats a subdomain from a web 2.0 site similarly to a domain. For example, a blog on Tumblr is just a subdomain of Tumblr.

I would like to get some backlinks from some web 2.0 subdomains to my money site. What if that web 2.0 subdomain has a lot of bad links pointing to it, even though the main domain itself is highly trusted by Google? (ie. I think Tumblr has a good DA overall and Google sees the overall Tumblr domain as reputable).

If there are lot of bad links pointing to a web 2.0 subdomain (even if the domain of this subdomain has a good DA), and then I get a link from the web 2.0 that points to my money site, would the penalty transfer to my money site?

    First of all stop saying sub-domains. Many people will get confused over it. Say web 2.0 sites.


    And secondly why bother getting links from web 2.0 sites at all? They won't help you much in terms of rankings.


    And don't bother talking about DA. Its a toy metrics.

    Yes, they are worthless links, so don't bother and no, it is unlikely that you will get "penalized" for the links unless you show a strong pattern of manipulative linking, and you'll get a message in Search Console if that ever happens. The new Penguin just ignores bad/manipulative links, so there will be no algorithmic "penalty".

      A link or links from a site doesn't matter. Links from many sites can cause alarms that the user is trying to manipulate the SERP's.

        Right, and in that case, it will set off alarms that cause a manual review of the site, which would result in a manual penalty. I don't think there is a set percentage or number of manipulative links that causes an algorithmic penalty - especially under the new Penguin filter. At least, that's how I imagine the process at Google goes. Nobody knows for sure.
