I never seen this before until the past few months.

I have a website sports blog over 12 years old, its in google news and I added those social share plug in from Jet Pack where new articles are shared on your social media pages automatically

so I have a social media page for my website on facebook and twitter

I typed my website name in search and my website is number three position with my facebook and twitter right above on the top

when I add .com to the end of my site name my website appears on the top but with no sitelinks.

I was told that I should index categories to get sitelinks, I use genesis theme on wordpress and just put no index categories and tags.

But someone suggested to index categories and that it wont cause a duplicate content penalty.

First of all, I think that having the top three spots for your domain (without the .com) is a good thing and because they have much higher authority than your domain probably has, it's not uncommon at all for a Facebook and/or Twitter page to rank higher than the actual domain name for that kind of search.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty and there never has been such a thing. It was a theory repeated so often many years ago that it is now being seen as a "fact" instead of the myth that it is. Definitely DO NOT no-index your categories!

Don't worry it is usual thing, but it means you did not focus much on SEO
one of the most important benefit of social media page is ranking higher on google by direct and indirect ways. just give more focus on content, SEO of your website and make sure your new backlinks indexed by google always

Social media has a lot more activity going on it's not unnatural to have it rank above your website.

Frankly speaking, its good to have 3 pages ranked on the top spot of Google for your brand, and I'm not surprised to see facebook & twitter above your main page, they hold much more authority than your site & have much traffic flow going on there, so its nothing to worry about.
