Hi Guys
I am trying to do keyword research but I have doubt with all these tools out there in the market. I mean, any tool can just extract data from any third party tool and pull up some data. How can you know it's accurate?

Also I am looking to check the competition for each keyword. So what are your opinion on which has the best keyword research tool and competition so I can see which are the best keywords to realistically rank for?

Best
Chloe

Any tool that will allow you to see competitor backlinks is better than not being able to see them so I'm not sure that "trust" plays any role whatsoever in spying on the competition.

We prefer SEMrush but it's not free. If you want a free tool, the best one I know if is SEO Review Tools Free Backlink Checker.

No tool can accurately predict how hard a phrase will be to rank for (although they all claim to do it well). You have to use your brain along with what the tools show you in terms of backlinks to domains on page one and what the sites are that are on page one. If they are all major websites, you stand very little chance of beating them (at least for that exact keyword phrase). If there are a few obscure sites and they don't have great backlink profiles, you stand a decent chance of being able to overtake them. Don't worry about anything but the sites that are on page one for any given search query. The "also-rans" don't matter and neither does the number of sites competing for a phrase.

First of all, there are two types of tools available in the market: -

    1. Google Keyword Planner - This is a free tool in which you can research keywords for free.

    2. ahref and semrush - both of these are premium, you can research both tasks in ahref and semrush, and you can also check who is the competitor.

Tools are never accurate, they are just made to change the problem in solution. These tools provide you only ideas in which you have to choose what is right or what is wrong.

You can do keyword research on these tools but you have to make the accurate keyword for your yourself. And if you want to find out who are the competitors of your website then ahref and semrush are best tools to find competiton.

According to me, ubersuggest is trending now. And, the evergreen keyword tool is Google keyword planner. But If you ask me which tool I use then my strategy are different.

I always optimize websites for all the keywords, no matter how many searches a keyword getting 50 or 50K, for business and leads every keyword is important.

So I always search manually for a keyword and Google auto result and suggestions give me 10 - 15 keyword suggestion that the user performs on Google. So note down those keywords and start optimizing.

SEMRUSH is not a typical keyword research tool; it offers so much more than just researching keywords.

Unlike other tools where you need to add seed keywords to start your research, here you just need to add your URL (or your competitor's URL) and it will show you all of the keywords that are ranking for that site.

This makes it easier for you to find short-tail and long-tail keywords that you can target and beat out your competition.

First of all none of the keyword research tools will show you the exact searches
There are some free tools that are doing pretty well
    1.keywords everywhere
    2.ubersuggest
Keywords everywhere will show you the number of searches, they may not be exact, but the keywords suggestions that they provide at the sidebar of the serp will give you some awesome keywords that you weren't aware of.

There is never an exact answer, all estimations.

I use Ubersuggest because it is free, but we also have a Moz account at work and I am honestly in love with it. I am more general marketing & writing than SEO, but my SEO collegues rave about Moz too.

Also when doing writing research I like Answer the Public as it gives you the questions that people are actually searching for!

Very important perspective and question. All I know is that Bing, for a campaign I was doing, brought my sign-ups but those sign up where trash. So, from my experience, I would advise using Bing's keyword search tool.

There's tons of tools out there.

As many as there are fish in the sea.

Some of them look great. But taste awful.

While others seem bare, and dull, but...

... THEY'LL GIVE YOU A TASTE THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME!

Anyway, the majority of keyword tools out there pull from Google Keyword Planner.

    Good idea?

    Maybe.

    Maybe not.

Google Keyword Planner is good for reference. But lot's of their data is super inaccurate. And they have a tendency to "hide" stuff from people trying to do keyword research for SEO.

    The ideal option?

    Google Suggest.

And any keyword tool that gives you data (pulls back keywords) from the Google Suggest database.

What so good about that, you ask?

Keywords from Google Suggest are timely (they're search phrases that people are looking for RIGHT NOW), they hold nothing back (the purpose is to list keywords from most searched to least searched to convenience searchers), and...

... you get a TON of keyword phrases that Google Keyword Planner will never give you!

Forget about the numbers for a while.

Most of those are taken from the Keyword Planner.

And a lot of times, they're super inaccurate.

Try to target Google Suggest based keyword phrases.

And target lots of long tail ones all at the same time.

So you can rank for tons of stuff. That no one else is targeting. Because they're all using the same keyword tool.

And you'll get more traffic with a lot less effort...

Google Keyword Planner: for keyword researching

  • About the data accuracy.
There is no keyword research tool which can give you accurate data. The number they provide is monthly average. And the amount of data the keyword research tools has will bring variations in search volume.

Second: The site will not bring traffic from one single keyword. It will bring traffic for several keywords. I would say look for main keyword and check out how much total search traffic top search results are getting. This will give you much clear picture.

In my opinion I think ahrefs is a good keyword research tool. Because...
    Their data is huge.
They are easy to use (which will help you to use the tool more efficiently)
They have nice features and filters (which will help to get data as per our requirements)

    About Keyword difficulty
Every tool has its own KD calculations. I rely on ahrefs KD because they calculate KD based on backlinks. Once I can get keyword which doesn't require too many backlinks then I can manually check search results on page related stuff and do my on page to beat the competitors(because on page is in our hands.)
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11519441].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Mfav5
Ahrefs seems to be one of the best. Keyword planner is free and it is always useful to compare the results.
KD is a relative concept so checking the top 10 results in google is necessary to determine if it is possible to rank for the keyword or not (DA, PA, links etc).

Sorry, I don't believe in keyword tools anymore.

All they are good for today is for generating seed keywords, my opinion from what I am seeing today with how the SERPs are showing.

The SERPs are where it is at these days, it's free

What I do is stick with a very close group of buyer keywords and just replace the product, I do this also for local and specific other niches with their own closely grouped keywords and just replace the product, industry word part and check what the actual rankings are doing

I call this Model Based SEO

The benefit of using Model Based SEO - comes from gathering data and visualizing the competition.

Model Based SEO closes the gap between what Google actually does and what you do.

People know details of SEO and Keyword Research and so forth.

The problem is when to use what you know.

Model Based SEO solves the problem of when to use what you know.

Just this morning I was following a trail for "ephemeral experiences" in marketing. I clicked one listing then clicked the back button to find "people also ask" listing just underneath the listing I clicked. If this is not monitoring activity of user experience I don't know what is.

Folks I think the days of going thru a long list of maybe ranking factors and filling in the blanks for your webpages are long gone I'm including how keyword research is being done. Also is you do what everyone else is doing what are your chances of succeeding if eveyone else does the same.

I think UX/User Interactions is the New SEO and the only way to know is monitor the actual results that RankBrain is actually listing for clues.

I've tried the majority of them, and ended up sticking with SEMrush for most things. Overall estimated volume of search traffic isn't really that accurate with any of my websites, but that's to be expected when most keywords that we're ranking for are long-tail. Still preferred it a tad bit more than Ahrefs, personally.

Doing our keyword research is the core thing of PPC marketing and SEO practices.
As we all know that Google has its own standard and free keyword research tool which is Google Keyword planner.

Using the GKP have an advantage compared to other tools. Because the data you get from it comes straight from Google.
