I started a discussion, Which ranking factor is most important to rank No#1 on Google. I got many replies and everyone saying the quality and number of backlinks is still the strongest factor.

So my question is, Websites which have fewer backlinks are ranking no#1 and websites which have many backlinks with a good quality, ranking below them.

So, how can anyone say the backlink is the most important factor?

I think backlinks are important in Google ranking just as the quality of the content is. But for obvious reasons, Google considers the quality of the content more important. It is possible to have backlinks but still appear nowhere around the top. And again the reason is obvious, if the site you are backlinking to is not authoritative, you will not score more.

You got it partially right. Yeah, backlinks are important. But their numbers are not.

A site with a handful of quality links will rank way better than a site with a millions of worthless links.

Good quality according to who? Please don't tell me you are relying on a tool or mythical rating like DA or PA to tell you something is a quality link.

As I experienced, Backlinks are helpful to get the traffic on the website and we get continuous traffic if the website has quality content. If a site has relevant quality content and with less backlink it can be ranked on any search engine.

Quality of the backlinks is a factor for Website ranking but not the number of backlinks. Google gives preference to Quality backlinks and Quality Content. The content on the website should not be duplicate.
