Hi,
I am Alvin a junior marketer that wants to specialize in SEO. I am looking for a tool that could spy on the links created by my competitor. I need to have a record of when the link is built and when the link is dropped. Ahrefs and Sem rush doesn't have that and its fairly inaccurate for link building. Does anyone of you have any recommendations? Any help given is deeply appreciated.
Cheers
Alvion

A tool like that would be extremely difficult to come by. Just think about it, is there analytics software that determines when a link was built to your site? In Google Analytics you can do things such as track links and record campaigns on them, but the start date of when the link existed? Difficult, let alone probably not even that important. Let's rephrase the question and figure out what exactly are you're trying to accomplish.

    * BuzzSumo (a tool for viral content)
    * Feedly (tool for content marketing)

There is nothing that will do that. Nobody has the resources to crawl the internet fast enough to accurately determine when a link was created, not even Google.

Thanks, guys! How do you effectively spy on competitor's link building tactics then? I thought majestic do provide the date when links are acquired?

I am facing this problem in Ahrefs, the links that they last checked are links that are outdated and with google update, my data is showing me that competitors with a lesser link on their page actually have better ranking in SERP. I am suspecting, only high trust websites work these days, like the really authoritative ones... other than that I don't think it is useful.

You don't really need exact dates to see what work a competitor has done, and no Majestic does not provide the date the link was acquired.

It takes Google, with all of its resources, weeks to crawl the entire internet. Tools like Majestic and Ahrefs have nowhere near the same amount of resources. It can often take them weeks, if not months, to find some links. Other links they never find.

Not sure what the date reported in Ahrefs has to do with a Google update.

Also, the number of links isn't what really matters. What matters is the quality and strength of the links.

I also don't think we have a tool that can do exactly what Alvion is talking about. Otherwise, the tool should be able to tell what the competitor is thinking and when they are likely to drop a link.

If you're looking for a tool to compare links with multiple competitors so that you know what links to build in order to close the gap, I would suggest the SEMrush Backlink Gap analysis. It actually seems to crawl better than it had in the past after a recent software update, and you'll be able to plan your link-building easily with the exported sheet. It's worth doing once you've got your foundation links out of the way I think.
