Here are a few that may make sense:

    1. See if you can have a mobile version of your web site when users use her mobile devices to access your web site
    2. Secure your site by upgrading it to the newest version of WP.

Step 1: list of all pages from the old website

Step 2: the redesign needs to be done on a temporary URL

Step 3: test the new website

Step 4: do proper 301 redirects

Step 5: make the jump to the new website

Step 6: run Google Webmaster tools

Step 7: check verification status and re-submit

    Step 8: Robot.txt

    Step 9: sitemap submission

    Step 10: monitor the changes

First, it is important that the new website be mobile phone friendly. It will allow the millions of surfers who use their phone to access the site. Second, you need to optimize your landing page. It should be attractive persuasive. This way, it will make visitors take a few more minutes on the site. It will help increase conversions.

  • Hello Sami

Make the sites structure SEO friendly. Do not put all content on one page. Have different pages for your services/products. I see lots of people redesign their pages and make 1 page for their homepage and have all service on that page without much content. Install Yoast if you haven't yet, it's pretty useful for on-page SEO. Install an SSL certificate and compress your images. Site speed is important for conversions.

Thank you all for the great advice, much appreciated.

in regards the point it4int had mentioned in "Step 4: do proper 301 redirects" is that necessary even if the url address is the same ?

The reason i am asking is my website had a page rank 3 and when the first website design upgrade was done 7 years ago my page rank went to 0 and i could not find the website anywhere for any previous keywords.

    Hello Sami,

As your website is in WP and you designed it past 6 years but now most of the people search on their mobile devices so you must keep in mind that today your website is mobile-friendly. So go for AMP(Accelerated Mobile Pages) in WP(WordPress). Then you start for other SEO activities.

    Hi Sami,

Looking down through the responses to your questions so far it's pretty clear there are a lot of people answering that have no more knowledge of the subject than yourself (probably less).

Although post numbers don't always equate to experience or subject knowledge is is often a red flag. Just be very wary about acting upon advice from those with only a handful of posts.

It would also be useful to give more specific information on your "redesign".
Else all answers will generally be generic.

i.e. By redesign do you simply mean a new "theme" but all the pages remain the same URLs, text, images etc?
That is a fairly easy transition with little risk.

What are your goals/objectives? Better rankings? better conversions? Better security? Better user experience?

Your main goal will likely be to sell more/get more sign-ups/click more adds. This may be helped by better SEO but conversion is a huge factor.

    How to achieve those objectives?
    More security
    Modern styling
    Mobile friendly
    Faster loading
    HTTPS

    Detailed tasks

    Update WordPress and plugins
    Install/Customize new theme
Install ithemes or similar security plugins
    Minimize scripts and images
    Optimize images
    Add custom menu
    Improve Onsite SEO (maybe plugin)
    Install caching plugin
Add SSL to server and enable on site
    Add more quality content pages

All the above are pretty safe options as noting really changes (except maybe SSL- so include a 301 redirect from http to https)

After this you get into the more risky stuff (i.e things that may change Googles view of your pages) like:
removing thin, dodgy, copied etc content
Any changes to the text or structure of existing pages.
    Url changes etc.

If you are really worried about repeating you last redesign results (and you probably should be) then I would suggested a staged approach to the changes something similar to the above.

Sorry Sami, that was not his advice.
in fact he (or she) just Googled the question you asked and that was the result.

    see https://iwinmarketing.com/a-guide-to...-affecting-seo

So the responder has no knowledge of the subject just an ability to Google.
And that advice is very generic and not specific to your case. Although generally correct.

From your previous experience you already know that a web redesign can be fraught with problems. So you need to put together a plan that is specific to you, your site and your specific goals.

Speed speed and more speed, Sami. Make it super duper fast. Google loves fast loading sites these days. Other than speed, a clean design seems favorable for search traffic. Not too many heavy and clunky sites on page 1 these days.

Making the website mobile phone friendly is key. Then how you will optimize it will determine whether it goes to places or not. Lastly, ensure you go for the upgraded WP version.

The first thing I do is research my competition and compile myself a set of long tail keyword phrases. The second most important step is optimizing your content both on the front end and back end. When I say backend I am referring to things like meta tags and file names.

Of course backlinking is very important.

Make sure to register your site with googles webmaster tools to see what google sees.

You should make sure to optimize your site and pages for the keywords that you're targeting. Here are some good on page optimization guidelines to follow:
    • Home Title Tag: your main keyword should show up twice here, with a variation of that keyword
    • H1, H2, & H3 Tags: these tags are very important(especially <H1>), and should always contain your keyword.
    • Keyword Location Within Text: try to place each your keyword near the beginning of the first sentence of each paragraph (maintaining at least 100 words between paragraphs).
    • Keyword Density: you should aim for a density of 1.5% - 2.5% for each keyword that you're targeting. Important: You should not have a keyword density above 3% (Google sees this as "keyword stuffing", and rankings will suffer as a result).
    • Use Your Keywords as Anchor Text on your page: link to an internal page on your site, and then link to an authority site (eg: wikipedia) that is related to your keyword.
    • Images: use the "alt tag" and rename your images to your chosen keywords.
    • Decorate Your Keywords: bold, italicise, or underline your keyword at least one time.
