Google: Amazon Alexa Rank Does Not Impact Google Search

This is probably super obvious to most of you but this may be the first time I've heard Google comment about this. Amazon has this Alexa rank feature, they had it since like 1996, a super long time. Google's John Mueller was asked if Google uses it for ranking sites and he obviously said no.

This is at Alexa.com, not to be confused with Amazon Alexa digital assistants, but owned by the same company.

Here are the tweets:

  • I think now would be a good time to ask Alexa on whether Google results affects Alexa ranking =D

Most of the webpages getting traffic today are not necessarily great at all. They're bouncing around topics to be unique. Not to mention, this does not end well. What happens when website after website just adds more and more information to get ahead of each other? That doesn't make sense. That's why you need to write on topics very quickly.

Otherwise, you won't just be behind the other decent webpages, collecting decent traffic. You will be hit very negatively by Google algos and put way back on page three, so forth.

In addition, and more directly to this article's topic, Google Alexa rank is not used by Google but you can expect to see lots of correlation between websites that rank well in Google and high Alexa rankings. That is the goal of the Alexa tool: to show who is getting more traffic.

No surprised, Alexa rank is a very poor, distorted measure of website traffic and requires users to voluntariliy download software to their browsers to send signals back to Alexa about their activity. Only a certain subset of people will do that which totally distorts the numbers Alexa claims.
