This question caught my interest. I did a google search and read this 2 articles seem quite helpful.

    https://searchengineland.com/seo-for...anguage-295092

    https://yoast.com/seo-copy-foreign-language/

You can read it. Or just google, I saw a few more articles on this topic.

    Good question!

In this scenario, should I use unique content or use the translated version of the same content for all the versions of the website?

Don't use the services of software based translation tools. Googlebots index such things as spam. (Such is the official advice given by Google)
Instead translate the content by yourself or by an expert and maintain different web page address for same content posted in different languages.
      Regards.

        I disagree.

I use a WP plugin called GTranslate on a client site. They have about 2000 pages of content. He ranks in like 30 different languages with that plugin. He's using the paid version that's like $25 a month but it's working for him. His site is based in the US but he's getting worldwide traffic and some of the articles that get no traction in the US get a good amount of traffic from other countries.

I haven't experimented with the free version but that should also work in many cases.

Again this could depend on the niche. If you're using a lot of slang and things that don't translate easily it might not be that great.

I was specifically talking about computer-based translating apps.
If your friend is paying $25/month, then I have reason to believe that it is a human based translating service and not computer based.
As long as content is being translated by humans, there is no worry.
          Regards.

It is certainly a new thinking. But honestly I don't think google can punish one for translating content on a site in different languages. After all the content targets different categories of people.

SEO for multilingual website requires native nationalities to work for their respected language page. Translated content will not work nor being understand by the appropriate region because it is very confusing and have grammatical errors.
