How will SEO change in 2020?

With paid ads taking up more real estate and zero-click searches being used increasingly by Google, it seems like it's getting harder to rank and get clicks organically.

One suggestion I came across on how to approach SEO in 2020 is to go omni-channel (i.e. be on multiple channels - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Podcasts, etc). And part of this strategy is to repurpose content so that you can distribute across all of these platforms.

E.g. Take a video and turn it into audio files for podcasts. Then create blogposts from these podcasts.

Besides this suggestion, what other SEO strategies do you think would work in 2020?

I think verbal search will emphasize more long-tail searches. Google My Business is getting even more important for local search so we'll see mass adoption and hopefully some crackdown on spammy sites.

Why wouldn't you just do that anyway? Better than pointless speculation about what might happen next year.

I think that the quality of the backlinks is becoming more and more important, so not the quantity of the links, but the quality.
    One should consider here:
    • Anchor Text
    • In-Depth Link
    • High DA

Quality of the links has always been important. That's not new.

And DA has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of a link.

Omni-channel marketing is not an SEO approach. SEO would be a part of an omni-channel marketing approach.

It's nothing new. Just more BS from gurus trying to invent words to act like they know something nobody else knows.

Can't beleive people are acting like using multiple channels for advertising and marketing is some unique and new idea.

We get this post every year. Is it too early to post one asking how it will change in 2021 yet?

As the people who know what they are talking about on this thread suggest, it won't. In fact, whitehat SEO has changed very little in the last decade (or longer). The only thing that has changed is each year, more and more nefarious tactics stop working.

Next year's biggest change in SEO is the rise of voice search. Remember these statistics: by 2020,
    >>31 percent of smartphone users worldwide will use voice technology at least once a week.
    >>55 percent of us house holds will have a smart speaker by 2022
    >>50 percent of all online searches will be voice-based by 2020. You are supposed to be. For voice search on a mobile or laptop, making the links appear on Google's first search results page is still good enough. But it's not enough on a smart speaker.

If you are not yet concerned, let me lay it down for you: only one search result will matter if voice search overtakes text search. You're going to lose, big time, if it's not you.

SEO is a rapidly-changing environment, and by 2020, a lot will change. You'll also need to change your on-page SEO, as voice searches reply in voice and not text links. Organic search may start to incorporate even more social signals, but more focus should be put on the content experience.

SEO dynamically works. Something Stay as same in 2020 but Something new advantages for the user. like the Zero-click searches.it means if user search queries than google show the direct result to the user, without them having to click away anywhere.

Local SEO changes zero-click searches are local search for which the results are shown on the SERP itself, in Local Packs, a single Local Pack takes up as much space as an entire SERP shown to a user.

If SEO is irrelevant why have you commented in at least 4 threads in this section? Why would someone that believes SEO is irrelevant even visit the SEO section?

SEO is just as relevant now as it has always been. If you know what you are doing you can Optimize and get a ton of traffic that you would not ever get no matter how great your content is. In most of the competitive niches anyway. Even the most meager on and off page efforts may increase your traffic 10-20% for some keywords. That is not irrelevant.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of new websites are placing light grey fonts on white backgrounds? Personally, I can't read the content, so I bolt. Betcha a lot of visitors also bolt.

I see a lot of new warrior websites and the text is the same. Betch the bounce rate is high.

Often we see threads where the Original Poster is new to marketing and builds a website that has been online for approximately 90 days. They have decent organic traffic, relative and contextual content, etc., but no opt-ins and a high bounce rate. I wonder why? Yep, the font thing.

Ads may be taking more and more space, but the data suggests that Organic search out performs "Ads" as in 5 to 1 and maybe a bit more ( ads account for 3% and Organic accounts for 18% ) And I suggests that its not "Harder" you simply have to be "Smarter" in your SEO approach.

This would be what I would consider a "Marketing" approach and NOT an SEO one. YES you want to create multiple avenues of traffic. But you have to keep in mind that each and every platform has its strengths and weakness's, as well as a more targetable audience. So creating a single piece of content ( like a blog post ) and throwing it across all of the platforms simply does not work. You can direct traffic to the blog post, but how that looks on each platform needs to reflect the user interest based on platform vs your narrow interest of getting traffic to your post.

Yes this makes sense... but you have to keep in mind that what you may say in a "video" is NOT what you might say in an audio file. IE using a graphic as a visual example of what you are talking about does great on video.. and obviously would be lacking with audio.

Originally Posted by HazelWong22 View Post

Again I do not consider this an SEO strategy.. more so a "Marketing" strategy. In terms of SEO its more and more about the context and intent of the end user and matching THAT vs some broad topic.

Taking a topic like "Forex", The term "Forex" is going to provide you with very little to no gains in term of getting listed in search... its not that it wont/cant happen... just not starting out. Take a term like "how to trade forex with $100" and you all of the sudden have a decreased amount of competition, and greater possibility of creating a collection of content that will rank. AND you are now at the lower end of the spectrum of people in terms of financial backing.

If you are selling a "How to trade Forex" product... a target audience of low startup capital would be a good place to start. providing content on how to trade with smaller investment - alongside a forex trading tool makes sense, no?

I think writing and creating great content will be mainstay in 2020 as with past years. I bet they will continue to crack down on paid links.

Hopefully they will relieve some of the rules and level the playing field for people with less money. They should allow people and companies who work hard to rank higher in the search engines.

I read somewhere that organic listings still account for 80% of clicks.

I believe SEO is becoming for video based, and more mobile compatible.

As far as strategies go, focusing more on the appearance of pages and less on optimization factors.

Another strategy would be just keeping an eye on up and coming websites, and try to establish back-links or a profile on them.
