How will SEO change in 2020?

With paid ads taking up more real estate and zero-click searches being used increasingly by Google, it seems like it's getting harder to rank and get clicks organically.

One suggestion I came across on how to approach SEO in 2020 is to go omni-channel (i.e. be on multiple channels - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Podcasts, etc). And part of this strategy is to repurpose content so that you can distribute across all of these platforms.

E.g. Take a video and turn it into audio files for podcasts. Then create blogposts from these podcasts.

Besides this suggestion, what other SEO strategies do you think would work in 2020?

I think verbal search will emphasize more long-tail searches. Google My Business is getting even more important for local search so we'll see mass adoption and hopefully some crackdown on spammy sites.

Why wouldn't you just do that anyway? Better than pointless speculation about what might happen next year.

I think that the quality of the backlinks is becoming more and more important, so not the quantity of the links, but the quality.
    One should consider here:
    • Anchor Text
    • In-Depth Link
    • High DA

Quality of the links has always been important. That's not new.

And DA has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of a link.

Omni-channel marketing is not an SEO approach. SEO would be a part of an omni-channel marketing approach.

It's nothing new. Just more BS from gurus trying to invent words to act like they know something nobody else knows.

Can't beleive people are acting like using multiple channels for advertising and marketing is some unique and new idea.

We get this post every year. Is it too early to post one asking how it will change in 2021 yet?

As the people who know what they are talking about on this thread suggest, it won't. In fact, whitehat SEO has changed very little in the last decade (or longer). The only thing that has changed is each year, more and more nefarious tactics stop working.

SEO is a rapidly-changing environment, and by 2020, a lot will change. You'll also need to change your on-page SEO, as voice searches reply in voice and not text links. Organic search may start to incorporate even more social signals, but more focus should be put on the content experience.

SEO dynamically works. Something Stay as same in 2020 but Something new advantages for the user. like the Zero-click searches.it means if user search queries than google show the direct result to the user, without them having to click away anywhere.

Local SEO changes zero-click searches are local search for which the results are shown on the SERP itself, in Local Packs, a single Local Pack takes up as much space as an entire SERP shown to a user.

If SEO is irrelevant why have you commented in at least 4 threads in this section? Why would someone that believes SEO is irrelevant even visit the SEO section?

SEO is just as relevant now as it has always been. If you know what you are doing you can Optimize and get a ton of traffic that you would not ever get no matter how great your content is. In most of the competitive niches anyway. Even the most meager on and off page efforts may increase your traffic 10-20% for some keywords. That is not irrelevant.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of new websites are placing light grey fonts on white backgrounds? Personally, I can't read the content, so I bolt. Betcha a lot of visitors also bolt.

I see a lot of new warrior websites and the text is the same. Betch the bounce rate is high.

Often we see threads where the Original Poster is new to marketing and builds a website that has been online for approximately 90 days. They have decent organic traffic, relative and contextual content, etc., but no opt-ins and a high bounce rate. I wonder why? Yep, the font thing.

Ads may be taking more and more space, but the data suggests that Organic search out performs "Ads" as in 5 to 1 and maybe a bit more ( ads account for 3% and Organic accounts for 18% ) And I suggests that its not "Harder" you simply have to be "Smarter" in your SEO approach.

This would be what I would consider a "Marketing" approach and NOT an SEO one. YES you want to create multiple avenues of traffic. But you have to keep in mind that each and every platform has its strengths and weakness's, as well as a more targetable audience. So creating a single piece of content ( like a blog post ) and throwing it across all of the platforms simply does not work. You can direct traffic to the blog post, but how that looks on each platform needs to reflect the user interest based on platform vs your narrow interest of getting traffic to your post.

Yes this makes sense... but you have to keep in mind that what you may say in a "video" is NOT what you might say in an audio file. IE using a graphic as a visual example of what you are talking about does great on video.. and obviously would be lacking with audio.

Originally Posted by HazelWong22 View Post

Again I do not consider this an SEO strategy.. more so a "Marketing" strategy. In terms of SEO its more and more about the context and intent of the end user and matching THAT vs some broad topic.

Taking a topic like "Forex", The term "Forex" is going to provide you with very little to no gains in term of getting listed in search... its not that it wont/cant happen... just not starting out. Take a term like "how to trade forex with $100" and you all of the sudden have a decreased amount of competition, and greater possibility of creating a collection of content that will rank. AND you are now at the lower end of the spectrum of people in terms of financial backing.

If you are selling a "How to trade Forex" product... a target audience of low startup capital would be a good place to start. providing content on how to trade with smaller investment - alongside a forex trading tool makes sense, no?

Hopefully they will relieve some of the rules and level the playing field for people with less money. They should allow people and companies who work hard to rank higher in the search engines.

I read somewhere that organic listings still account for 80% of clicks.

I believe SEO is becoming for video based, and more mobile compatible.

As far as strategies go, focusing more on the appearance of pages and less on optimization factors.

Another strategy would be just keeping an eye on up and coming websites, and try to establish back-links or a profile on them.

We're almost a month into the year, so here's my thoughts on 2020 so far:

1 - Demand seems to be great this year when it comes to small/midsize businesses looking for SEO services.

2 - Data-driven on-page SEO tools are a an insane advantage for anyone whose figured out how to use them effectively. PoP/CORA/Surfer and a few other tools make it possible to teach someone effective SEO tactics rapidly.

3 - Links are still #1 on our list of priorities and diversity is key.

And here is how you identify people you should not bother listening to on the topic of SEO.

This "bullshit" is happening now. Between Alexa and Google Home, there are approximately 50 million devices in the US alone. As much as twice that are Siri assistant enabled.

Five years ago, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced during his Google I/O keynote that 20 percent of queries on Android devices are voice searches.

Ok Google, voice search has also become an integral part of all Apple devices in its voice assistant Siri.

The use of voice-control technology has become mainstream and is rapidly growing worldwide. It is also finding its way into a host of everyday devices, including cars, wearables, smart TVs, appliances and other connected gadgets.

          It's bullshit.

I'm not saying people do not use voice search. I'm saying there is nothing special to do for "voice search".

Instead of typing "how to paint a fence" into their browser people are saying "how to paint a fence" to their device. And then they get the same results.

That's what the majority of "voice searches" are.

Using best practices in SEO are becoming more essential because voice search is on the rise. Voice search is not only faster than traditional methods of searching for a query, it is also a lot easier. This is what makes it the number one reason for people adopting the trend.

We already see differences in traditional search engine results from using a desktop or laptop and a mobile device. Many websites are not optimized for mobile devices. For example, try typing in directions to a location using a laptop and mobile phone.

The SEO landscape continues to evolve. Those who are not using the latest in semantic language, snippets, and markup techniques will be left behind, as we already see in the mobile phone searches. The built in tags for schema microdata has been around for years in anticipation of Google's hummingbird algorithm update in 2017. Google prefers short, concise answers to voice search queries.

Not only is content targeting long tail keywords still important, question keywords should also be targeted. Voice search queries often contain a lot of question words like how, what, when, why, where. Relevant content in conversational tone will become the standard in SEO. Writing with a standard reading level helps in ranking content. Use CSS3 and HTML5 frameworks given that they load mobile web pages quickly.

In the era of voice search, where the competition will only get tougher, marketers and SEO's should make it a habit of optimizing their content for voice search. This best practice will help you get better rankings for voice searches and increase your organic reach.

And this is why I say that anyone saying you have to prepare for voice search is full of shit and has no idea what they are talking about.

None of that stuff is new. It's all stuff most of us SEOs have been doing for years. Apparently a lot of people just weren't paying attention to what has been going on in the industry.

As an example, we have been targeting searches that ask a question since like 2003 because people have always searched that way. Voice search did not change that.

Here is the rub though. Nobody has any idea if their site is doing well for voice search or if it has benefited from voice searches or not. There is no way to track it.

Quality is better than quantity. Write one single high quality article every Monday. and promote it on several platforms, build backlinks for it and guest post once a week.
That's 12 high quality articles in your blog and 12 guest posts on trafficked sites. Your website goes crazy for SERP ranking.

  • What ever best practices that had worked for SEO in the past will work for SEO today.

Personally the exact best practice search engine optimization methods, I've used five years ago to rank in 1st position in SERPS, are still relevant and working today.

So the year 2020 won't see much change for what's best practice for SEO. If you are highly skilled in SEO, you'll know that not much has changed in search engine optimization in the past ten years. The websites you buy quality backlinks from may have changed, but the concept of getting high quality backlinks for a good position in SERPS hasn't changed.

So having a profile on multiple social media platforms may influence your prospects perception of you, but it might not get you ranking better in SERPS.

Study SEO and master the craft, and you won't have to worry about what new SEO trends are going to be working for you in 2020.

SEO stand for Search Engine Optimization it's important for digital marketers, website owners and brands of all sizes because, in a nutshell, it allows your site to appear in the search results when someone types or speaks a query for which you have an answer or solutions. In other words, the share of organic search results will continue to gradually decline as more ads rule the SERPs. it's increases a website's visibility in the SERPs which leads to more organic traffic to your website.

Your stats are correct, but the stats are somewhat misleading in that 31% of smartphone users worldwide use voice technology at least once a week, but what are the smartphone users searching for? Weather? Restaurants? Information? eCommerce?

Once we marketers know what the 31% are searching for then we can identify the "search intent" and attempt to "fill/meet the search intent."

Break that down by country, state, town, search intent etc. and I know for a fact that the percentage of searches that qualify for the typical online marketer are really only about 10% and of that 10% only 3% of online marketers will target the 10%.

of course no-follow links mainly used to build ratio. suppose you are crate 100 back-links. in 100 back-links you should build a ratio. you crated this type ratio 70 do-follow and 30 no-follow. when you crated this type back-links then search algorithm will know that you are legally crated back-link and they you give rank.
I hope you read carefully and solve your problem.Thank you

    The question is...

How will SEO change in 2020?

Mike is right. Everyone that says Voice Search is SEO and will change in 2020 is wrong. Period.

As previously discussed Voice Search has been around for a very long time, so that is not a change. Do more and more people and more and more devices use Voice Search from year to year to year? People reach an age where they are able to speak and speak into more and more and more devices. The population increases from year to year to year. So, Voice Search is on the rise and.. I wonder why?

One suggestion I came across on how to approach SEO in 2020 is to go omni-channel (i.e. be on multiple channels - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Podcasts, etc). And part of this strategy is to repurpose content so that you can distribute across all of these platforms.

E.g. Take a video and turn it into audio files for podcasts. Then create blogposts from these podcasts.

Besides this suggestion, what other SEO strategies do you think would work in 2020?
Sure, video is getting more favors from google.I have seen people convert speeches and even lectures to audio-video

Re purposing content is the word. At least everyone who cares about SEO is doing it. A lot of content is being converted into videos and distributed to a number of social media platforms.

seo doesn't change their algoritms change. when google catch same tricks to rank a website on serop without having a valuable and informative content and google analysis that all peoples already find the easy trick and with this they also hit google algorithm legally than google update their algorithms.
AS same in 2020 google publish a core update where he give priority to a valuable content, but it doesn't have to mean that now SEO does not work.
still you have to optimize your content otherwise you can't rank on the google

The biggest change to SEO next year is going to be the growth of voice search. Consider these statistics: 31% of smartphone users worldwide use voice technology at least once a week. 50% of all online searches will be voice-based by 2020

If GIFS were allowed on the forum, this is where a giant facepalm one would go.

You obviously did not read one bit of this thread.

  • One things I have been focusing on is using video to rank as the suggested videos since they often appear around article 3-4 mark for a lot of searches.

Many people if they have the option to watch rather than read will opt for watching so good to cater to that crowd as well.

      Google does not love quality.

Do sone searches and look at tge results on pages 2, 3 13.

Tell me you do not usually find good quality there, often better than 1, 2 or 3.

In 2020, I feel that posting content with media (Images, Videos or Sounds), has become a trend. Nobody takes much interest in an article if there's not videos or images to make things clear.

Correction: Nobody takes much interest in an article that doesn't contain info they'relooking for in an easy to ready format / language.

How will they become important? Asking a question via voice vs via written word is the same... The only thing that's changing (and it has changed before 2020) is Google trying to answer voice with voice.

So, what will voice do that's new to SEO?
