publish articles on my own site or on third party websites?

I wrote a series of articles related to small business and growth strategies with unique and high-quality content. Each article has a link to my website, or I will be able to publish my profile with a link, if it is accepted by a blog/magazine

I have two choices
1) to publish those articles in the blog on my own website
2) to publish them in third party blogs, e.g. medium or some small business blogs/magazines

Which option is better from SEO point of view?

Is there a third option, e.g. publish it on medium first, and then in a month or so in my own blog?

Thanks
E

I can tell you what I do...I publish to my site(s) first and then will publish elsewhere after words. From a search perspective ( not SEO ) Google will remove duplicate content. So you don't want YOUR site to be the duplicate it removes.

From an SEO prospective - understanding the above, there will still be the passing of juice from a posted article ( that includes a link ) just not the visibility in "Search"

and then from a "Marketers" perspective, distributing content is not an SEO tactic per se as it is having your content seen on multiple platforms and eyes at scale. Meaning those that may see you on Medium may not have found your article via your website or search. So the platforms become a source of traffic in un themselves.. vs being a form of SEO.

      Excellent reply.

I'd add that you may want to re-write or at least restructure your posts on Medium.

Think of using third party sites as a way to introduce concepts to a new audience, then linking to a more informative peice that is on your site.

In other words, educate then add value

Publishing to your own site first does not protect you from this. Google does not care where a piece of content was published first. They will show the version they have determined to be more authoritative. First has nothing to do with it.

I agree.. and kinda not. read this: https://searchengineland.com/myth-du...penalty-259657 specifically this section " What are Google's thoughts on duplicate content? " 6 points down and you find " Google tries to determine the original source of the content and display that one."

A lot of my watching this over the years pretty much indicates, that yes they are pretty good finding and listing the original source. That being said, there are some things that can be done to make this a bit easier for google IE citation development on the original and the duplicate. Obviously not something that most do.

But considering the "Clustering" that Google does, and then determining the content is of value - they would rather display the "Original" vs a copy - but like I said, if the "Original" is easily identifiable.

Also at play here for the likes of you and I, we would know prior to placement of a written piece on another site if that site has greater value. Are we using that placement as a source of traffic in un itself, or are we after the SEO value of the link? This obviously determines if the piece is then duplicated, or posted as original on the 2nd party site.

So in part, YES I agree with you... a page with greater Google related value will take precedence, BUT if the writer of the content knows what they are doing, they can side swipe the Google value based on ownership of the content.

Both are important. You have to publish both in your blog and other blog publishing site as well. But try to make the blog posts different and unique.

Slowly publish parts of the article daily or twice a day on your own website.
Keep all your posts on one page.

You just write an article on the subject related to your website or product you want to promote. It cannot be pure promotion though. You need to make the content interesting and valuable for the reader.

It is good to publish on your own website first. In case of publishing it in third party websites, it recommended to have unique content.

I think both options would be beneficial for you on as an SEO point of view. I am not trying to avoid your question I just think you can win both ways. Of course your website is the main focal point so it should have constantly updated content. As long as that is met than branching off to other sites to share articles will bwe equally beneficial, just make sure you take care of your website first

Well, that's one tricky question to answer, If I were you I would publish the same article with the different structure on my website(for SEO purpose) and on a 3rd party website(for getting the link juice & the traffic). Just go play by the rule & you will be able to increase your traffic as well as the web ranking.

I think its better to use unique content even if you want to post on websites like medium. Medium have a great authority and if you write a good article with links to your blog/site you will surely see some good traffic coming in.

It all comes in content marketing plans. You should write similar long content to publish on thrid party sites and orignal series on your own site. It brings more traffic imo.

You definitely don't want to publish your articles on a different website first and then just copy paste the same article on your own. Google really doesn't like duplicate content.
The way to go, from my point of view is to publish some articles on the other website with average content and link them to your website; and publish your great articles on your private blog in order to get the most our of them.

Thank you for the answers! It is very helpful.

Interesting... It looks like most of the answers suggest to post on my own website/blog. While I though it is better to publish on third party websites because it gives me backlinks and new visitors.

My concern is if I publish it on my own website, it would take more time fo Google to discover it and hopefully it will eventually increase my rating. But what if it won't increase my rating in Google? I will just waste a valuable article that I spent time on? While if I publish it somewhere else, I will see new traffic right away. So in this case, at least, I will see it works.

It depends on the end goal. I suppose you want to end up with a powerful website, not just some quick traffic. Having good content on your site is important for this.
No one is saying not to post something on a third party site, but maybe keep the great material for your own site.

I recommend publishing on your own website for these reasons:
    - The article will be much easier to share, and find.
    - The article might get deleted on the website you post it on, without any notice.
    - It makes you look knowledgeable, and adding high value content to your website is always the way to go.

I understand guest post back-linking is a great idea, but if I had to choose between the two, my ultra high value work is going on my website.

Of course, you can post on both..

    Good luck!

If the article was a promotion for my business, I would publish it on my website. If the article could appeal to a larger audience, I would pitch it to a larger publication and move my website link to the author profile at the end of the post.
