Our company gets Google Alerts anytime our company is mentioned. However most of the time its in these very shady websites that aggregate us with other unrelated companies.

Sometimes it even puts us into an entirely different industry.

Is this possible that this is negative SEO that has been done by a competitor?

  • I'm curious to know too.
  • that is not an example of negative SEO

you will notice negative SEO most likely when a new, unusual type of low quality links appear in great numbers, at once
  • Sometime some of the competitors implement unrelated and low quality websites to point into your main site and you need to request to google for the removal of unwanted links via disavow tool.

  • The best you can do is keep a track of all the mentions and keep requesting removal of bad links.

However, if you are using Google Alerts as your main monitoring solution, you might be missing mentions.
  • No.

And here are more words because replies have to be at least 10 characters.
  • Brand mentions are a ranking factor, therefore a brand mention from a spam website is considered negative SEO.

The good news is negative SEO is having less and less of an impact on rankings. Google is well aware of the problems.

    • Sorry, but this first statement is highly unlikely.

I've never seen a single case where adding branded anchors actually hurts a site. If anything, these links might actually help correct some sort of imbalance in anchor text ratios. Yes, even though the sites appear spammy...

It's also not a sign of a negative SEO attack at all and more likely just random web spam that every single site with decent traffic will attract naturally. There's no way to stop it and Google knows that, so you are right in the sense that these links don't usually hurt a site the way they might have in the past.
  • No this is not the negative SEO, you need to request to google for the removal of unwanted links via disavow tool. Because some of the competitors implement unrelated and low quality websites to point into your main site.
  • That is not an example of negative SEO, Negative SEO is having less and less of an impact on rankings. Try to remove of bad links.

  • Examples of negative seo,
    1. Spammy Backlinks
    2. Fake social signals
    3. Negative review generation
  • Having your site scraped and reposted elsewhere is not negative SEO, but I would disavow the links just the same -- no sense leaving things to chance.
  • There are many types are negative seo, like creating bad backling and bot traffic, i don't know much about bot traffic,. but it is the way of ranking down of competitors website.
  • No problem if you don't want that link you can disavow it using webmaster tool
