Recently I have seen the new longer snippets in Google SERP. i.e., I found a meta description length 331 characters. Anyone can Clarify?

    This is what Yoast says:

Every now and then, Google changes the length. Nowadays, you'll mostly see meta descriptions of up to 155 characters, with some outliers of 300 characters

There is no maximum. Google shows more for some queries and less for others. Chances are, Google is going to show dynamic ones that they create from your content anyway instead of the ones that you specify. What (yours or theirs) and how much they decide to show is query-dependent and what displays is based upon what their algorithm determines is the best to show for any specific query. The amount shown also depends on the device someone is using.

If you are going to take the time to write your own meta descriptions, I'd keep them short - 120 characters or less. That way, IF they are shown (a big "IF"), they will not be truncated on mobile device searches.

Most people know this but it doesn't hurt to repeat it ... Your meta description does not directly influence your rankings. Google does not utilize those words for ranking purposes at all. It MIGHT, however, affect click-through-rates and that MAY influence rankings (a subject of many spirited debates here on WF).

I believe Google recently enlarged the amount of characters allowable for snippets, but I agree with keeping meta descriptions from going over what's allowable. I normally aim for 115-130 characters. In the past I aimed for 115, but now I go a bit more as the trend has shifted a bit towards being more descriptive.

Google has increased its meta description length to 320 characters but it does not show 320 characters everytime. So, it is better to keep the meta description details under 156 characters. It is also advisable to user your call to action and targeted keywords in the first 150 characters so that it can be properly visible to the searchers.

The ideal size is under 160 char, more then that will be truncated but will not hurt seo as google will display it according to query relevancy if it exceeded the limit of 160 char.
