Find out what, specifically, they are linking to on those other sites and create a better article/video/image than what the competitors they are linking to have. THEN, contact them.

As exprmb said, it also would help to engage with them a little beforehand, liking things they post on social networks, commenting on those social networks and establishing some rapport with them so that they know who you are and like you.

expmrb probably meant to say "it rarely will cut it". You'll get an occasional site that will give you a link with just an email and no other interaction but you'll have a whole lot more success if they know who you are and like you (a.k.a. the "buttering-up" via social strategy).

I'd try the direct reach out first then if they don't reply you can go to phase two with all the "buttering up" mentioned by the others, which definitely works, but why get something hard when you might be able to get it easy?

Also, I wouldn't concentrate on particular sites, (unless the site is phenomenal), but a list small list of sites. Run them through the "easy" way then move the non-respondents to the next stage until you've gone through all of your offers.

You might think that directly reaching out first might cause the site owner to remember you and give them a bad taste in their mouths affecting later reach out but that is not common from my experience using this technique.

Yeah, if the site is really good then I change the approach and spend more time getting an offer ready for them ahead of time and butter them up like was mentioned above.

Have you first checked to make sure that the links on those niche blogs are dofollow? If they are dofollow, then they are worth pursuing. When you get into contact with the owner of the site, offer to write a unique, 800-1000 word article for their niche blog in exchange for a backlink to your website. It's a win-win: the blog owner gets free, high quality, unique content, and you'll get a high quality backlink. Hope that helps.
