Surprised this 'ranking' continues....

In google searches for specific news items the first page results are often NYTimes or Washington Post or similar 'big media' links. No shock there.

But - those sites require paid subscriptions to read the articles on them. I'm surprised they can maintain the top rankings on so many searches - while they are 'subscription' only sites.

Has it always been that way for google resutls? I had not noticed it till recently. Google is delivering 'paying customers' to certain media outlets?

Damn you are astute. Mean that in a good way.

I know you are not big on conspiracy theories.

There is some underground chatter that the BIG 5 (The five major news outlets) have convinced Gnews that search engine news be it free or paid comes with strings attached.

Some say it is a threat to Internet Business.

With that said.. think CSIB aka Rich Schefren.

I guess what I wonder is how many 'visitors' (like myself) say 'no thanks' and move on to another site?

Do you think if enough people do that, bigG will rethink this? It's bordering on manipulation as two sites seem to be dominating the news search right now - and both are left leaning subscriptions..

Is this fairly new? I hadn't noticed it until the past week or two..

Maybe these leftist media sites are where the spenders are? not sure just saying.
I agree I refuse to subscribe to these media sites (can read it elsewhere for free), have you noticed they are full of google ads.

Is it fairly new? In totality, Yes. Try logging out of Gmail if you are logged in, clear your browser's history and anonymously use the same search phrase and see if there is any difference compared to the traditional way. Keep in mind the inexperienced surfer does not know what we know.

Did you see any difference? Oh, and DuckDuckGo. They are in bed with G now.

It's all about the "Benjamins", Baby!

Adblockers are one contributing factor. These big sites are struggling to make a buck just like everyone else. If your business is 100% ad-supported and everyone blocks the ads, what are your options?

It has proliferated recently - and I also refuse to sign up just because I don't like being directed to paid sites by a search engine.

Google is so good at telling where people go and what they do online - wonder if they notice their own search results are being abandoned in seconds....or perhaps they don't care.

I have had to grapple with the issue not once not twice but on so many occasion. I concluded that there must be some underhand deals that are making it possible for the big 5 to keep at the top of google search.
