Hi guys

I am currently building an industry-specific small business directory (ex: Plumbers) in Wordpress. The website will list Plumbers based on a location (ex: Toronto). Although there will be a national landing page from which users can select the location, I am expecting organic traffic to land on any location specific pages (ex: Plumbers in Toronto).

There are two ways that I found I can do this, and I want to make sure I use the most SEO friendly one while delivering a great user experience.

1: I create a single archive page that displays location based results. The URLs would look like: www.company.com/plumber/?location=toronto.
- This one is the easiest to build since it is only one page, and there is no risk of duplicate content.
- It includes internal search results to be indexed on Google, which seems like it's frowned upon..

2: I create one page per location
- There is a high risk of duplicate content
- I would have to create hundreds of pages
- No search involved and I can make a great breadcrumb with it.

My gut feeling is to do No 1 as it is a better technological solution, less work, and is more scalable. I also feel it is more 2020 than solution 2. This said, I know that if I build solution 2, it will be fairly easy to get my pages indexed properly.

What do you guys think?

    Hi Guillaume

It is better to select option 2.So that your page will get rank easily and in the mean time you should maintain perfect internal linking to pass link juice to get indexed and ranked easily.

    Hello!

I would go with easy. It seems it would take you forever to setup
option 2, plus the info would become outdated and need to be
revised. Go with option 1. You would probably need to add some
sort of content for SEO purposes but it would still be better than
    option 2.

number 1 option is great for longterm, also it will be easy to maintain too.
May be starting would be hard for ranking but once u got there imagine that you don't have to go for different pages and ranked them.

  • What is your intention with this project? Easy isn't necessarily effective. If you just aiming to have the website as a directory, then option 1 would make sense but may you run the risk of never being found in the search engines.

Combining option 1 and 2 would be best for effective SEO. It may take much longer, but may be more user friendly to your website visitors. Which means if you don't duplicate content then it makes your 100's of pages unique and may improve overall ranking in google for your keyword "plumbing"

Each page is specific to location and companies listed in those locations. Each company may have a unique selling point and therefore making each location different to another. More content is always better, as you'd be targeting multiple keywords in the plumbing industry. You can niche down on each page making your website rank in the #1 position in SERPs for multiple keywords in the plumbing industry.

    Just my 2 cents...

I agree with this awnser. Go with the first option for the better url structure for your business. This strategy also help you to make you website light weight and search egnie friendly for better search visibility.

Agree totally with Internet Trillionaire. If you read this: ( https://incomebully.com/local-seo-tu...icate-content/ ) You begin to understand your #2 option is used pretty regularly. I know I use it for my sites and my clients sites.

I "Suspect" that because it falls under the local portion of the Google Algorithm, the idea of "Duplicate Content" is lessened a bit.

I would better than suspect in doing both options you will find that option 2 will probably out perform option 1.

If aside from the keyword and maybe a different paragraph the content is "Duplicate" how much longer will this really take?

I find in SEO given 2 options; An easy one, and a more complicated time consuming one... the complicated time consuming one is usually the better option. There are no short cuts in SEO

Content. You read tones of recommendations, do that, link with that, check that, etc. The best ways of achieving great results, now and in the future, is with great unique content.

Write relevant content about what you do, why, how to do it better, what tools you use, hpw you price, fast delivery, etc & post it in your blog, website and few other blogs. It taks time, but the results will impress.

Nonsense over-linking & blog comments will give you a short boos but it will not last. Good content is not affected by any updates from google and your articles will be shared big time. Ad 1 link per article and use your own photos.

I manage to get 1st position for about 10 keywords for one of my companies. That was 2 years ago. Still first now. But you need to work slow and regular. Rankings achieved through content are durable

I´ve already done this with solution 2 and most of my city pages ranks number 1 for example "Free quotes plumber Toronto". It takes a lot of time to create each page but you are rewarded with a top spot.
If you´re lazy, you go for solution 1 and you will end up on page 3 on Google.
Btw: use Siteliner to check for duplicate content.

My suggestion is, go with option 2 but do not use duplicate content. Make different content for every page. No need to add more content, you can add a bit of stuff on every page.

Option 2 sounds better even though it entails a lot of work and you are likely to spend more on it. However, it guarantees organic and sustainable results.

In terms of long-term commitment, Option # 1 seems like the best choice to go with and is less time-consuming, it might even be better to manage in terms of SEO.

My suggestion is, the 2nd option is best for you. Create a different page for different locations with different content.
