Wordpress creating massive internal linking headache

I've a really simple site with not a huge amount of pages. I created a blog section of it blog and thus far have five posts, but at present I really only have maybe 10 or so pages outside of the blogging area (I'm a photographer).

I've started taking my seo more seriously and taking a more controlled approach to my site content.

I currently have a total of 5,000 internal links as a result of extraneous wordpress crap that comes along with themes.

The three below pages represent three of many trash pages that google is telling me it's indexed and recognize as containing internal links (despite now being 404s).

mysite/blog/shop/
mysite/blog/shop/checkout/
mysite/category/blog/feed/

Can anyone offer some advice on what to do? I'm so fed up with wordpress but at the same time the thought of doing a complete overhaul is exhaustive.

Sounds like maybe you installed demo content from a theme that created a bunch of extra URLs.

I would make sure they are all gone. Then I would set the status for those URLs to 410. That tells search engines they no longer exist and will not be coming back, unlike a 404. You can Google how to do that.

Over a few weeks, you will see those URLs fall out of search indexes. If you want to speed it up, you can log into Google Search Console and request the removal of URLs, but you have to do that one at a time. Depending how many you have, that may or may not be worth your time.

Lastly, I would install an SEO plugin like SEOPress. That will give you some control over not indexing useless crap like date and author archives.

No offence to you, but that's why you hire people that know what they do and that's why you buy a professional WordPress theme. Especially when you intend to sell something online.

If that theme created 5000 unwanted links, who knows what other SEO mistakes it has in it. You clearly need something better.

Professional Wordpress theme? lol. Those are usually what cause these issues. Not to mention that Wordpress kind of sucks out of the box.

As far as I know, WordPress has special plugins for removing duplicate links
