Metadescription for auto-generated pages

Hello all,

my tool (pagerangers) recently showed me that we have a lot of pages that don't contain a meta description.

These pages are automatically generated category pages based on tags. So our webdev tagged all products and now everytime a user searches for that term, there will be a category page that contains all products with that tag.

My question is: is it necessary to write generic meta descriptions for every generic page?

I appreciate your support on this one. Thank you.

I am new to the forum. But it is my understanding that unless you are actively trying to optimize the auto-gen pages you do not need to add a meta description to that page.

These meta descriptions basically describes and summarizes the contents of your page for the benefit of users and search engines. While meta data isn't as important for SEO rankings as it used to be, the meta description still plays a significant role in on-page SEO.
In scenario when meta description is missing, poor or doesn't relate well to the search query, well in that case Google will pick the suitable title from page headings, visible content or even text in links pointing to the page.
As a marketeer I'd recommend you to write meta descriptions for each individual for better user experience as it significantly affects the bounce rate of webpages.

    Necessary for what?

Google will pick something from the page and show it in the SERPs that it thinks best matches the search intent.

Do you know of a keyword you're on page 1 or 2 for? Google it. Look at the description Google uses. Is it the one you wrote?

If you need Google to display your products in display results while people hit "search query" related to your product/service, then it is necessary to optimize your meta titles and description and embed keywords that are worth providing traffic. This is a sort of digital marketing that allows you to gain visitors via google searches.

You are fine leaving them blank. Google will pick a description, and it's something they have gotten pretty good at.
