We're in a situation to move the page from "example.com" to "example.com/keyword". And adding new content to the "example.com" page.

Does this change affect our ranking? If so how can we overcome this problem? Can anyone help?

Yes, it'll certainly affect the ranking as ranking is all about keywords and the moment you'll move page from one url to another url you'll loose all the keywords as well as backlinks. One way to overcome this is to use redirect plugin. We faced similar problem few months back when we were moving things from example.com/topic to example.com/blog/topic.

      Hey Rebecca,

I don't think the redirect method will work for Joe. This is because he is still using www.example.com URL. He can't put a redirect there.

A redirect will make www.example.com with the new content inaccessible.

    Yes, it will.

    Is the main page ranking?

If yes, you avoid the problem by not doing anything or by fully understanding why it ranks (so you can keep the elements that make it rank in place).

Yes. in the short run (3 weeks to 3 months).

I dont think you can avoid this problem altogether. However, this issues sounds like it will correct itself with time.

For the short run measure, these are the things you should do.

    1. You have to try to backward engineer what are the SEO elements that make www.example.com rank well and keep those elements in www.example.com/keyword.
    2. You should attempt to make sure that the page structure of new www.example.com/keyword and old www.example.com is very similar. You can change content however you like though.

Yes it will, but seems like you're doing what needed to be done. You can link the home page to the new product page to pass link juice, that will minimize the ranking fluctuation.
