Hey guys.

I have been making a website for a little over a month and have found I need to change the permalinks.

How detrimental will this be to my future search engine rankings?

As the site is still a work in progress i have built no backlinks to the site but it does have about 300 pages indexed in google.

Would i be making a big mistake to change the permalinks now?

Thank you for any advice or opinions.

It won't have a negative impact. Most CMS platforms automatically add the necessary 301 redirects when you change permalinks. Really it's only a concern when links are involved.

In your case, you are likely not ranking for anything and you have no links, so you really have nothing to lose. You may see some indexing errors in Search Console for a little bit as Google sorts it all out.

You said your pages are indexed. Are they getting ranked too?

If it was an older site I'd recommend 301 redirects.

As MikeFriedman said, with no backlinks, it will not hurt you at all. If your website platform (I assume it is WordPress) does not automatically re-direct the permalinks it probably isn't a big deal, either, providing you haven't done a lot of internal text links to other pages of your site. If you do have internal text links, you'll definitely want to change them on every page where they exist to the new permalink page URLS.

I join other contributors to mention that you can also use plugins like "Redirection" to perform a 301 redirect (if of course, you are using Wordpres)

There's not much at stake for you since you aren't ranking yet!
