Something that has been working for me recently is to position content around long-tail keywords. It's how I've been able to get content to rank on the first page for clients even if they have a far less authoritative domain compared to their competitors.

One type of content that can be done easily with long-tail keywords are FAQ posts. Creating these can be done by compiling the questions that people search for using a tool like Ubersuggest. I usually end up with at least ten keywords that have between 10-50 searches per month and very little competition. An FAQ section can also be added to the end of a long-form piece to capture additional traffic.

Creating FAQ posts have an added benefit of appearing in the answer box when people make a search, which improves the CTR.

Another strategy that has been working for me to focus on long-tail keywords that have commercial intent. Words such as "buy, special, deal, review, shipping" etc. all have a high ROI - even if the search volume is minimal compared to the head term.

I hope someone finds this useful.

This is a great strategy. But are you worried that Google will eventually start answering the questions right in the google search result... obviating the need for people to click through to your website?

Good point. That's my worry as well. We may have to think over it and do it more creatively, some unique content that search engine cannot provide from search result page.

You mean in the answer box when people search for a question? I thought that it would eat into the CTR of a page too before I started doing this, and I'm sure it does for some search terms such as definitions or song lyrics etc, but what I've found is that it actually boosts the CTR of the page by a considerable amount in the majority of cases. The answer box doesn't tell the searcher everything after all, and if they want the complete info they already see that the result is relevant to their search, which is what I think prompts people to click through.

I will say that optimising lots of content around long-tail keywords works really well when dealing with clients on a local or national level. There is often no competition and most of the existing results in the SERPs are homepages, not landing pages or articles, which makes it much easier to rank a client's site and give them a great ROI.

  • Great strategy! The reason it works so well is that Google wants your content to be easy to quote. When your content is easy to quote, Google can use it to answer user's queries right in SERP, it can pull matching quotes from your content into your snippet. And the FAQ sections are a perfect match for this purpose.

Great strategy!! The long-tail keywords have the ability to get a better conversion as compared to the short tail ones. Search engines help the long-tail keywords to rank easily. Very well explained the fact of growing of CTR on any particular business.

The long-tail keyword has the chances for better conversion due to its user intent like when someone searches for a long-phrase they are more likely at the end of the buyers' journey and ready for the purchase. So using the longtail keyword for your brand can help you rank better and create opportunities for conversion as well.

    Thank you!!

Yes, I have a similar approach. On my blog, I'm typically posting answers to long-tile questions and that appears to be working for me.

Long-tail keywords are long query searches that are more specific - and usually longer - than more commonly used keywords. Long-tail keywords is a great SEO strategy. Though Long-tail keywords get less search traffic, but will usually have a higher conversion value as visitors are more likely to use when they're closer to a point-of-purchase as they are more specific.
