Pushing a Keyword Over The Wall (Page 2) Into Page 1: Suggestions?

Hey guys, I'm having a hard time pushing a local keyword from the top of Page 2 (Pos 11), over to the bottom of Page 1 (at least Pos 9 or 10). Do you guys have any recommendations I can try? I'm sure I'm not the only one having this issue and could help others here as well.

This is for a local roofing company, and the keyword is; roofers + city

I've analyzed Page 1 and half the companies are those ugly infamous directories that we all love (or hate), such as HomeAdvisor, Yelp, HireAHelper, AngiesList, and Thumbtack... the remaining are local businesses.

I know that Ahrefs metrics don't mean a whole lot and that search engines don't really use them, but it's all I have for comparison. According to Ahrefs, my site is more authoritative and should have no problem competing with the remaining local businesses currently on Page 1.

I've done a ridiculous amount of OnPage over the last 3 months, improved speed... in fact, my site loads faster than most of those directories or local businesses - go figure! I've acquired some good links, added a nice video, and has great photos! It's a real 3 yr old local business (not a lead-gen, just FYI).

I'd love to hear what you guys do when pushing keywords over to Page 1. I'd love if you could share a few of your tactics or strategies that have worked for you.

It is really simple: get backlinks.

Look up skyscraper technique, broken backlinks for SEO, silo structure for SEO.

Thanks, I'm familiar with the skyscraper technique, but I don't think it has to do with a lack of backlinks - there's plenty HQ ones already.

...but I guess it never hurts to have more! Thanks for the recommendation.

        I beg to differ.

If there were plenty of high quality backlinks, you'd be #1.

Plenty is defined by the competition.

If you're not in the top 3 spots, you do not have plenty.

And, yes, it's a question of backlinks.
All the stuff you said you've done would have gotten you on page 1, if it were about onpage.

Yelp and those sites, they have lots and lots of backlinks... And a nice internal linking strategy.

I outrank yelp and such for keyword + large city... I do not have lots and lots of backlinks, in general. I have a handful of good backlinks... Maybe 20. And tons of backinks you get when random directories pick your site up.

The random directory backlinks are not doing me much good. The handful of good backlinks is what's doing it for me.

I know because I am pushing a site for keyword + really large city with poor quality backlinks... Thousands by now and only at #17, while the other site with a handful of good ones and maybe 110 gotten from random directories has a bunch of keywords on page 1, anywhere between 1 and 8.

I would say "that's true"...except that I have more links than the local business competition that's currently sitting on Page 1. But hey, you never know! Thanks for your help.

            Backlinks come in many varieties.

Backlinks from a page that has no backlinks of its own have next to no power.

1 backlink from the homepage of a popular site, say Huffington Post, cary as much as about 1 million backlinks from pages with no backlinks of their own.

In other words, it is not the tital number of backlinks alone that matter.

Plus, you seem to think you know all their links. I doubt that: the best SEO tools miss links.

You are not alone when it comes to directories and if it makes you to fill better,
Google have problems with directories for years since it start using DMOZ
    as it substitute directory.

As for example, about 15 years ago our PR6 directory was #1 and now for the same +
keywords it's went down to page 2 while amount of links compare to 15 years ago
more than quadruple, simply because G. doesn't care about good backlinks directory has.

So, it doesn't matter if you push or pull your directory as long G's algo pushes useless
sites to the top, you won't be on page#1 or at least long enough to generate good traffic.

Interesting! Yeah I figured it's hard to beat those directories like HomeAdvisor, Yelp, HireAHelper, AngiesList, and Thumbtack... but there are a few local businesses that are on that first page that I know I can replace (I'm assuming lol)... just need a few other things to try.... perhaps as DABK said, I need more backlinks!

Thanks for your reply, appreciate the input.
