Registered new domain – discovered heaps of old spam backlinks!

Hi everyone!

After seven years of working as a freelance translator I finally got around to starting my own translation website in order to market my services to direct clients.

I'm really new to the whole SEO process (besides a bit of SEO copywriting I did for work). After I started building some backlinks, I noticed something really strange in the ahrefs backlink checker: my domain has more than 191 backlinks already, 97% of them dofollow. Ubersuggest further suggests that most of them are from early 2019 (I registered the domain a few days ago).

What's more, almost all of the backlinks are pretty...bogus. The domain score seems somewhat legit, but the content is mostly gibberish with a link or two strewn in.

Is it possible that someone already owned my (fairly generic and keyword-heavy) domain name before and bought spam backlinks? How do you explain this?

And what should I do? Should I just enjoy the free backlinks and focus on building more quality backlinks and content? Or should I disavow them to avoid being associated with such behavior?

  • If you are certain that the links are of no use and can harm your site. Then disavow them. It will be the simplest answer.

  • As you suspect, your domain was probably owned before.

    Years ago, I bought a domain only to discover that it had been blacklisted. That created chaos because I only discovered it after my product launch had started.

    Ultimately, I had to ditch that domain and get a new one. It was the easiest solution. The registrar couldn't help me.

  • If they're quality backlinks, enjoy them. If they're spammy or irrelevant, disavow them. If you decide to keep them, then see what pages most of the links pointed to. You may wish to recreate some of those pages (with the same url) in order to get the full benefit of the backlinks.
