URL Case Sensitivity Issue

Hi All,

I am a new member, A question curiosity brings me here. I have a website and all the URL's in lowercase and the canonicals are in lowercase too. But, when I type URL in uppercase, it takes me to the 404 page. I resolved this issue by restricting canonical tag in lowercase and ask developer to not redirect upper case to 404.

abc.com/page.html - Working
abc.com/PAGE.html - Working
Canonical: abc.com/page.html

But now, I have a suggestion from my colleague to redirect abc.com/PAGE.html to 404 because this page do not exist.

I have a doubt that redirecting uppercase to 404 will lead to self-404. because the page is same.

Please help.

  • You could create a redirection script that will redirect people visiting upper-case URLs to lower-case URLs. A regex can be created for this by a developer that can be placed in your .htaccess file to do this automatically.
  • What about 'abc.com/age.html'?
