Unhealthy Obsession with checking ranking, stats and anything seo

I have noticed I have developed a very unhealthy obsession of checking my rankings every second and then check my stats to see what keywords are bringing the tickle of traffic.

Its frustrating having such an addiction because really and truely nothing much changes or you may see your keyword rank then later in the day dropped off again....Surely I will be more productive without being distracted looking at rankings and checking my stats and in most cases feeling a bit discouraged and then try and bounce back to do more work....yikees

And anything seo, I am really just coming mainly to this board here on warrior or sometimes checking other seo forums which is a bit counter productive because diff "experts" says different things like some pple saying there is no sandbox, duplicate content and all that while some swear it exist and sometimes panic I am doing the wrong.

I pretty much know the basics of what I should do, so why I keep going on all the seo forums is really beyond me...I hope this new found interest in not going to fade away if google keep my site in the graveyard for too long...

I wonder how you guys keep off from this addiction and on a positive note I was like this with my clickbank accounts but now things are more stable, that obsession is gone at least I check every few days now

    Hi Sherry,

We all experienced the same before, obsessive checking keywords and ranking, and the mood follows the rank up and down!

I suggest you give any SEO effort a 3 weeks, check per week, not per day and hour! There are very rare occasion your article will rank on page 1 in a day, just leave it and do more productive work like link building or creating content...

Regarding the duplicate content, most people confuse because it means different things in different situation:

Duplicate content doesn't apply when - You post an article already on other website like article directories, Google won't penalized you, unless you post the same article twice or more on the same domain!

Duplicate content does apply when - The same article will never shows on Google Search Result Page, even it shows, it won't be long before Google starts to pick one!

That's the duplicate content we are talking about! When we want multiple listing using software like SENuke, we need to spin it for certain percentage to leverage something called multiple listing.

Won't it be great if you dominate 5 or more out of top 10 results? That's why we need to spin articles and avoid duplicate content for listing in the same keyword!

I still believe in sandbox, because I had sites in there

I didn't bother about it because of testing, if I build tons of backlinks to it, I think it will be back on its' feet. Normally if you mess up a new site, it will be extremely difficult to get it back...

When we learn from "Expert", just be careful what they are arguing about... something they argue sometime just don't exists!

Hope this clear things up a bit!

As I said yesterday in my 'Google Dance' thread, I have the very same problem Kok gives some great advice up there though. I think as of now, I'm going to check my rankings once a week. When I think about it, obsessively checking really is counter productive. If my sites have moved down it makes me feel disappointed and sometimes unmotivated. If they have moved up, it gives me a false sense of security and I feel like I can rocket up in a few days. So as of now, I'm going to do my very best to only check weekly. In fact, I'll do it only on a weekend. You're welcome to join me It's gonna be tough

OK, I'll stick to the same - next Friday it is then The first week will be the hardest, after that I think it shouldn't be too much trouble to check only weekly

Edit: When I say I won't do anything for a week, I mean just my website rankings - I'll still be checking Google Analytics and such for my actual stats, although I'll try to cut that down too

I used to suffer from the same addiction but once you get more established and learn that sites don't get indexed at the click of your fingers, you will focus on getting other tasks done.

I find it is best to check my stats every other day so i can work on improvements in backlinking for traffic, etc. Works for me

Set up a spreadsheet, add your rankings once a week, react to ones that are falling or static. Then forget about it for another week and just build content and links.

We all have this obsession, like a kid with an antfarm. The only thing you can do is when you catching yourself doing it, try and do something productive instead. Like get and extra link done, or clean up your desk.
