If you have a popular site with loads of traffic sources that is earning good money...nah, you don't need backlinks.

People try to fake backlinks, game backlinks - they work far too hard for poor results. You've been around a while - you know this stuff.

A backlink is, simply, a PATH leading to YOUR site. Instead of finding your site only by looking for THAT site...visitors come through links on other sites. Googlebots notice you are creating a 'map of links' leading to your site and if the links are good ones (from active sites in related niches)...google rewards you by increasing visibility of your site.

increased visibility = increased traffic = increased sales....ta da!

There's much more to it, of course, but if you don't 'get' the basic reason for adding inks, not much point in learning the details.

    Getting backlinks nowadays is impossible?

The google dance has been gone for years....that was back when google updated 'on occasion' - google updates now are ongoing rather than the big shift here and there.

Not impossible to get backlinks if your site is one others are willing to link to..you might want to check backlinko.com to refresh your backlinking skills. Everything you need to know about backlinks is probably on that site.

Backlinks are important to your rankings, but quality matters more than quantity here. You want to create valuable content (with linkable assets) that will earn links from other authoritative domains.

    Your question makes zero sense.

First, yes, if you want to rank in Google for anything at least moderately competitive, you need backlinks. Anyone that says differently is clueless.

Second, wtf does a Google Dance have to do with links?

Really, there is no such thing as a Google Dance and there never was. Things move around for a ton of different reasons, but some mysterious influence by Google is not one of them.

Well, according to laughing silly their asses off G's. humor section,
continue to maintain these backlinks are irreplaceable part of having

No. You cannot rank it for good keywords.

You can rank it for Reddveil007 just by putting that as the title of a post that has not words (except the title).

If you promote that content in places that it could potentially attract links, yes you could rank.

Without links, you will not rank for anything competitive. You do not have to be the one building each link, but you absolutely need links.

Amazing content has nothing to do with ranking.
Lots of amazing content on pages 3, 4 and 12.

Look sometimes at all the keywords people find pages on your site in Google console.

      It will be edifying.

    1. Backlinks help Google and other search engines determine which pages should rank the highest for a given query => To put it simple, backlinks correlate with your website ranking!

    2. Backlinks can send you visitors through referral traffic => Backlinks increase your traffic.

    3. Backlinks can help search engines discover your pages faster.

In my experience, good quality content is not enough. You gotta have some backlinks one way or another. I never had this experience where I would rank for good keywords with a fair amount of search volume without any backlinks.

For long-tail keywords with very little to no search volume, you might rank.

OP: Your post truly asks 2 completely unrelated questions (not one "complex" question as you claim and seem to believe it is) but here you go:

    1) Yes you absolutely NEED backlinks to rank in Google Search, or Bing Search for htat matter. That is non-negotiable, they have been the strongest ranking factor for almost 2 decades now, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.

As far as getting backlniks being "impossible" - NOT EVEN CLOSE - Granted they're not a complete no-brainer as they were before, where any third world peasant (e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Phillipines, etc) with access to the internet could randomly post 10,000,000 gibberish non-sensical blog comments or forum posts with the spelling grammar and sentence structure so poor that you can pretty much read the foreign accent. That was pre-2007...

Gone are the days where automated programs that any Belarusian bunmblehead (or Russian) could execute a software spamming out 100,000,000 Web 2.0 Blogs, Profile links, Directory links, Wikis etc in no time and quikcly rank a crap site (some of those worked well up till 2017/2018)...

Nowdays, gaining backlinks actually requires intelligence, creativity, and a strong command of the language you are targeting. If you intend to rank in any english speaking market, you'd better be a native english speaker with a strong command of the English language and proper spelling and grammar.

So, I suppose if you're a complete moron, need "step by step instruction" on how to do (anything for that matter) and are incapable of coming up with your own ideas and solutions, are completely reliant on spun content and article generators (which don't work for SEO anymore and NEVER worked for quality content), are not a native English speaker, and can't afford to hire one - I suppose it WOULD be impossible for you to get backlinks in any English speaking market.

For the rest of us who have a brain and (IF targeting US/UK/AU/CA/NZ/ZA/BZ) are a native English speaker with a basic understanding of grammar, sentence structure, word usage and spelling - It's acutally quite easy to build backlinks. For any niche.

    Now For your second question:

The "Google Dance" continues. But it has absolutely NOTHING to do with backlinks. And it's definitely not an either/or thing. They BOTH have always been in existence, not having anything to do with one another (nor do they even topically overlap).

Based on the question you asked, I think it's a safe bet you have no idea what "Google Dance" is. You should probably look things up from now on before posting so you don't make a complete buffoon of yourself.

Here's a helpful article to educate you on the topic courtesy of Serp.co

    Now quick question for you:

How is it REMOTELY possible that you've been on/around this forum for 12 years and still know so little? Honestly, it wasn't till I saw some of the replies referencing your length of time on the forum that I went back and noticed your tenure here - yet that question is one I would expect of a BRAND new noob in their first hour on the forum - and not much beyond fhat...

Shocking really, and quite sad... Long time memners should be rather embarrassed - It's like the research study that demonstrated that Fox News Viewers were typically (LOL) less informed on the news/current events than people who don't watch (or read) the news at all

If one were to screenshot this thread and your tenure on this forum and post it on BHW, Wicked, DP, wjunction or GFY they would have a field day picking you apart and referencing YOU as IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE that this forum is useless and full of morons... #FACT . ..

If you STILL understand that little about SEO when you're 12+ Years in, this most likely isn't for you... Find a new career

Ugh backlinks. I'm back at the internet business after a 10 year hiatus. Do they still work? I was a master of them and I know they worked then. Seems now social media and "engagement" is taking over yet social media sites never come up in Google searches. Theyre a world to themselves.

As such, backlinks are helpful in light of the fact that you understand what you're getting. You can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the connections you're building are high-esteem and, after some time, will create the inactive traffic you long for. The other advantage of great connections is that everyone will in general be worth more for your SEO.

Link building is great when its natural. Whatever niche you are in you should love it. Read articles, be in forums and leave links where it applies. When you leave links for the purpose of just leaving them, readers, and the owners of the website or article will notice it and maybe ban you for being spammy. You do not want to earn a reputation as a spammer.

Whatever business you are in you should be in business to provide a service or product that will help the customer. You should not be in business to just earn a dollar or scam someone out of there hard earned money. This is what spammers have a reputation of doing. Spamming innocent people out of there money or wanting to earn a quick buck.

I never heard of the Google Dance. They say you learn something new everyday and this was cool to learn. Google is always coming up with new algorithyms and different terms and policies to rank sites. Sounds like they are making sites more even instead of ranking them in house.

Google wants you to pay for the traffic, but Google is also full of sites, so SEO is VERY difficult nowadays. Still, links are very important.

Get quality referral links through guest articles. It also helps in obtaining good traffic. But these guest articles are usually paid nowadays.

PPC is very costly nowadays, but can complement your SEO effort. Google Search is very expensive, but you might want to try Facebook Traffic campaigns (at some point it was driving very cheap targeted traffic with even better conversion rates than Google Search).

Consider YouTube commenting, but don't overdo it.

Yes, you need a backlink when you are new on google as the backlink work as the support to your website from another website. Backlink supports your websites very silently but strongly as they show confidence in your content that worth giving support to your website. The more important thing about backlinks is the quality of backlinks matters more than the number of backlinks.

So, are you saying if Google see that some site has many, many, many
backlinks it will decide to move some useless stuff to the top just because
someone "awarded" site with useless credibility?

If this is the criteria G. ever uses, it will blow every fuse there is in G's system

Every SEO knows the importance of backlinks but not everyone knows how to utilize them properly. So yes we all need it.

For me, it's still Google dance now called half-a$$ update that they roll-out to test it then if they make a final decision and place everything accordingly they'll announce it and call it a Core algorithm update.

Those half-a$$ updates they keep rolling-out are probably the reason why there's a lot of issues going on in their algorithm (e.g. deindexing issues, indexing issues, bugs here bugs there.).
