Hi,

I have a site and I am going to get an SEO professional to help me work on improving it (ps I work in IT, but more cloud and coding etc).

Anyway, I was wondering what details do I need to collect?

- Site overview/history
- Rival sites
- Keywords
- Social media details
- Expectations

Is there anything else I should prep?

That's a pretty good list. The one thing that sticks out to me right away as missing that I would ask for is who are you trying to reach? Who is your target market? A keyword list is a good start, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

You have created a great list that you need to focus on or consider the fact before choosing an SEO professional. There are many parameters that include Expertise in On-Page like the implementation of Header and description and placement of keywords at the appropriate place. Must be familiar with the google algorithm updates. And coming to the off-page tactic must expertise in updated strategy. Analyzing your website and try to figure out what your audience out there really looking for from your business.

How would adding quality content help the OP get ready to hire an SEO professional? (That was the question. Cross my heart and hope to die.)

I run a marketing agency. Here's a typical questionnaire we distribute as part of our discovery process:

    1) What is the demographic of your best customer?

    2) What 'secondary' demographics do we wish to target?

    3) What is most important to your client/customer? Examples can
    include price, service, convenience, etc.

    4) What questions do customers typically ask when they contact
the sales team? What information do they typically seek
    before making a purchasing decision?

    5) What is the typical sales cycle in terms of days?

    6) On what attribute do customers typically make an immediate
    buying decision?

    7) [insert company name] has been identified as a top competitor. What
other companies operating in this space are considered to
    be competitors?

    8) What specifically do your competitors do well?

    9) In your opinion, where are your competitors weak?

    10) What specifically are the primary goals of the campaign? Secondary goals?

    11) Have you ever hired a digital agency before? If so what were the results and why did you ultimately separate from the agency.

History of SEO professional doesn't matter in my opinion, How worthy it is ryt now matters only.

A good SEO person won't really need anything from you other than your URL, access to Analytics and Google Console. The rest they'll ask for eventually.

If that's all an SEO asks for, I would run far, far away from them.
