Even with social media, you have to use links, even if you are not selling anything,

In order for any to read anything that you reference somewhere else online, you are required to use those words/links to get your friend in the group or forum to actually understand what you are talking.

Even search engine lane (i think that was the one) i was reading that said, backlinks are still number one to get first page of google.

using press release sites and news sites is the best way to get on first page, but it is only for a limited time and lasts so long. for long term results, it takes time or you have to buy out other companies that are already ranking or they have the ability rank faster than usual. And any company that is selling, i doubt would sell if they are getting first page rankings unless the offer is greater than their desire for their current income/traffic stats to sell
