First page on google: Do you have to be Ginobili?

Hi guys. I want to share a thought of a particular vision I have (as a newbie) about ranking on first page of google, and I would like you to let me know I'm wrong please! I NEED to be wrong!
Look, I see it this way:
To rank in page 1 of google you need to have one of the top ten best webpages , since there are only 10 results shown there, and of course, only the best pages (for google's eyes) will rank in one of those ten positions, ok?
But normally there are thousands or even millions of webpages listed for any keyword in the search results, and not talking about the most highly competitive and demanded keywords for evey nich.
So, if you are NOT ranked in first page, will that mean your page is not well enough? Or are you a dummy? Of course not! So, my idea is, no matter how good your page and your SEO efforts are, ranking in page 1 of google is equivalent to what Ginobili is to basketball or what Michael Jackson is to music.
What I want to say is, that there are thousands of great anonymous basketball players and excellent singers who will never in their life reach the glory and taste the fame, just because the room is to small for more than a handfull of people. Or, how many current famous and glorious basketball players can you name? 5? 10? 20? 20 is allready exagerated. And how many Madonnas can you name? Can you believe that in a world of thousands of millions of people, only 10 or 20 of them are great basketball players or highly talented pop singers? No way!!! There might be houndreds, even thousands!. (if not, just watch american idol a couple of times and you'll see what I mean) But, the very enormous mayority of them will die unknown, no matter what they do. The reason? Not enough place for them
in the playground. That's all. Or call it this way: Only 10 results for the first page.

    Yea Chris,

You only need to beat on of the Top ten.

Don't worry, about the others. I have gotten #1 for a billion websites! But it didn't turn into any money. LOL

Also make sure the 10 aren't CNN,Wikipedia, CNBC, etc.

Very true, there are much to learn from here! You will have a lot of searches with no sales, and PPC is one of the best way to test before you do any SEO.

      BTW,

If you are trying to rank for page 1, all you need is backlinks from authority sites!

You can Google for Angela's backlink and learn from the other Warriors there, they have tons of testimonials!

I gotta disagree on this point. It all depends on what keywords you are targeting.

If there is a Wikipedia article targeting the *exact same keyword* as you, then you might be in for a battle.

But, in the *vast* majority of cases, you will be looking an entirely different keyword.

If you typed in "at home teeth whitening kit", and #1 was a CNN article about just "teeth whitening", it wouldn't be hard to outrank CNN for "at home teeth whitening kit".

Just a general rule of thumb..

I try not to compete with them, and if I have to, I will. Sure anyone can compete with non direct related terms with wiki, if you are targeting on topic stuff, I would always skip, unless it worth a million to me :p!

You do not have to be the top 10 in basketball to be known. You have the top 5 players on every team that all who follow the team knows about and the number 1 player on most teams has a poster in 1000's of homes.

And you also have soccer, baseball, hockey, ice hockey, chess, dart, golf, polo, curling, boxing, kickboxing, thai boxing, horse riding, 60m, 100m, 2000m, skiing, bob, bungy jumping.

My point is that there are a million of niches to attack and the number of people who try to be good in that niche will be smaller in some niches than others.

In each of these sports you have a few things you can be best in.

You should probably not try to rank for basketball. Maybe you should try to rank for "red michael jordan nike shoes" first.

And the competition is not as hard as Google shows in their 1-10 of 16.332.345 field.

Search for red basketball shoes and I see 1.640.000 results.

    However

If i go down and hit the next button (actually I hit 10, go down again and hit 19) I will see that it stops at 436. So in reality there are in googles eyes only 436 real competitors for this keyword. Others are local, similar sites, duplicates, mentions of the word, new sites.

Do not take this wrong. Many of these 436 pages can be hard to fight, but that is all that google think is relevant results.

Here is what they call it:

"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 436 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

The most important thing to focus on first is not the ranking, but creating the best product or website you possibly can. Your website should be 10 times better than any of your competitors. This will help you a long way. If you have a crappy website it will be 10 times harder to be more successful and getting backlinks from trusted sites will be tough.

Just remember seo begins with creating the best product, service or website you possibly can.

Not entirely true as I can get links from really high PR sites with crap sites. I see where you were headed though so somewhat true.

Gotta disagree here. If your site doesn't get noticed you won't make sales no matter how great you think your site is. Too many folks on here focus on making their site perfect when what they should be doing is getting their site to the top of Google.

Yes, I agree. As long as your content is not too "bad", should get some sales... If your site doesn't get notice at all, zero sales to be made!

However, for long term business, also tune your content to be more friendly and make sense !

Got to agree with Turbohips here, your site does not have to be 10x better to get a good ranking. Your content should not be junk but one of the most important things is just to work hard at SEO. Yes, it's not natural because you are intentionally working at it, but it's almost impossible for google's bots to realize this. Just do everything bit by bit and it appears natural, and you can get a high ranking.
