Examination of Anchor Text Ratios for SEO

A new article on Search Engine Journal asks even though anchor Text Ratios are considered important by many SEOs for ranking in Google, are they really something to worry about?

SEOs have researched millions of search results and discovered common anchor text ratios for the top ranked sites. Are these anchor text ratios the key to ranking better and avoiding manual penalties?

Anchor text is the technical name for the words used in a link from one page to another web page. Sometimes the anchor text is "Click Here." Sometimes the anchor text is "Best SEO Dallas, Texas." An anchor text like "Click Here" is going to be ignored by Google for ranking purposes. But an anchor text like "Best SEO Dallas, Texas" could be used to help rank the page that is linked to for the search phrase of Best SEO Dallas, Texas because Google uses anchor text for ranking purposes.

The founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page authored a research paper in 1998 that described Google's innovative PageRank approach. The research paper is called, The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine. The research paper explains the logic of using anchor text for ranking purposes:

In the following quote, where the Google founders use the word "hits," what they are talking about is a keyword found on a web page.

  • Anchoring text with a relevant keyword makes more sense, rather than hyperlinking some random text.
  • Uhm ... the algorithm has changed so significantly since the early days of Google in 1988, neither Sergey Brin nor Lawrence Page would even recognize it today.

Suffice it to say that very little of what Google did in 1998 is part of their core algorithm today.

I'd throw that SEJ article in the trash bin of history and burn everything in the can!

    • Before or after writing an article about it for your forum where posting members are becoming fewer and fewer?

  • Good luck getting into the top page result. No one knows the algorithm as it changes all the time. You can waste tons of time with SEO and although you may improve things for a time, Google will change things, and so will all of your competitors. It's like trying to hit a moving zigzagging target. You will find that you can't keep up with it, and that your time would be better spent on more productive ways to get traffic.

    • Googles in the ad business

If your page stops searches, they loose money so they promote garbage pages that keep people looking so they click ads

Google has no incentive to produce quality SERPs

      Compare it to Bing

      Way better quality pages

      Google is now crap
  • I have examined such sites that were not having any sort of repetitive words and yet they were being ranked. So, if keyword's density is looking natural and not over-optimized then there is nothing to worry about.
My preference is "yes" because when you review top 10 results, each of them would be having some % maintained for certain anchor text.

  • I think anchor texts are important to tell Google (and our readers) what they´re gonna find

But, we must avoid repeating the same anchor texts.

We can manage this with, for example, Ahrefs or DinoRank

Personally, I prefer using longtail anchor text

And sometimes my keyword + my brand

    What do you use?

  • It's not that hard to rank at the top and understand what Google likes. Google's algorithm doesn't go through drastic changes.

If you think SEO is such a lost cause, why are you bothering to even read posts in an SEO forum?

  • Use anchor text with target and relevant keywords. One anchor text should be put in one webpage. With the help of this, you can give an internal link to your website.
