How to outrank authority sites? Is it even possible?

Hi.

This is from my real life experience!

A couple of weeks ago, I wanted to buy something.
So, I searched online and in my locality.
The thing I wanted was available, but there were so many people wanting it, that most of the places did not have it - offline and online!

So, I thought to myself...
"Perhaps I have a good market here, a niche?"

The demand was high - the supply was not good!
I decided to meet that big demand and start supplying!

I did my research - but evidently, I forgot one major part -
I forgot to see if that market had authority sites on Google Page 1!
And it did!

My bad -
I already purchased my domain name and hosting!

So, now what do I do?

Does it mean I can never ever rank on Google Page 1?
Have I started a bad business?

Sorry, but I cannot reveal the niche!

Some solace here, on the first day that I was setting up my website -
Yesterday...
I got 18 visitors and 34 page views.
I also got visitors from Facebook -
even though I did nothing n Facebook!

(How can this be?? No idea!)

Any suggestions??

  • If you do well then you also get some business from that, there is SEO for your help, they can give you result & you can also rank like others.

    The way that you would compete with an authority site is to
    build your own authority site, so start adding more quality
    content to your site, at least one page every day.

    If I wanted to corner the market, I would setup even more
    websites rather than having just one. Perhaps you can hire
    someone to help you create more content.

    Then do whatever you can to drive traffic to your site(s) like
    FB page/group, Pinterest, all the other social media and
    perhaps some local/national advertising.

  • You don't have to outrank authority sites. If an authority site in the niche is #1 - you can be #2, 3 or 4 and still get a share of the market.


    Look for subniches in the niche that may not be fully covered by the authority site - look for related niches that might 'feed into' this one.


    You may eventually end up with your own authority site - but you can have a profitable site without being #1.

      If the main keyword is, say, audited financials, you could outrank authority sites if you add a few words to it.


      Not my niche, so I do not know the traffic. But I've come across the people who searched for audited financials for mortgage brokers or you can do audited profit and loss and balance sheet...


      No, not a lot of people would search that way. But if you have a bunch of keywords that have 10-100 searches a month and you make it to #1, it might be as good as having 1 keyword that has 20,000 and you being #1.


      Yes, it requires more pages / posts. Whereas 1 top keyword requires on page or post and a lot more backlinks than you can afford.


      Thing is, you can afford to do the many pages approach.


      Yes, authority sites often show up #1 for the long keywords... but they're not going after them directly. Which means you can take them. (I am talking about looking to see if they use the word in the title in the anchor text (You'd need a tool like majestic seo or ahrefs to know that one if you do bulk... But you can check manually the 1st result in the serps. If they do not have it in the title or on the page, odds are good you can take them.))

  • It is possible to outrank anything with consistency. You haven't mentioned a niche, but excepts 2-3 particular niche, some long tail keyword results can be achieved pretty fast as short term strategy.

  • Actually many folks concentrate on high volume keyword so the competition is naturally high. Its a good thing but at the same time if you are starting out then its not a good idea. I recently started a coaching on WF and there i learned that super low competition keywords are still there but due to low search volume many get ignored. That's the chance for newbies or starts where they can work on them and rank easily even with ON PAGE SEO only. Now this is not applied to all keywords but optimized content really helps in outranking many of the competitors as i see my website slowly moving up in ranking due to this factor.
    For more competition you need to work harder in terms of content and backlinks , if you are just starting out then i suggest you to stick to low volume keywords for now. Once your low volume keyword rank , it get the high volume up in ranking as well.
    For FB traffic , may be any of your visitor shared URL on FB and you got some visits from there.
