What Metrics to Track in SEO?

Hey guys! Leandro here,

The other day I was trying to create a comprehensive SEO report for one of my clients and some questions have popped into my head and I hope you guys can help me find the answers that I am looking for.

In Google Search Console is easy, we should track Clicks.

But in Google Analytics, the thing gets more complex. We have these metrics:

- Users
- New Users
- Sessions
- Pageviews

I thought that tracking "Users" is the most similar metric to "Clicks" in the Search Console.

Which metric do you recommend to track in GA and WHY? Am I wrong by thinking that "Users" is the equivalent of "Clicks"?

When I try to find more information on Google, I can't find a clear answer to this.

Thank you guys.

Users is not the same as clicks. Users counts the number of times someone landed on one of the pages of a site.

Individual users does the same (but does not count the 2nd or 3rd visit, only the first time someone landed on one of the pages).

Pageviews counts home many pages, all the users (one time visitors or repeat visitors) opened.

If you go to google console, it will show you which pages got the most views, where people enter the site, what they do next.

If you're doing SEO, this might not be a good idea, unless you have full control over titles, and domain name. You could get them to be #1 for the best keyword and they might not get anyone visit due to lousy domain name or domain / page titles.

I would recommend you to consider "New users" + "bounce rate" .

That is some absolutely terrible advice. Bounce rate is not an important metric to focus on.

Hi Leandro, that's a very interesting question. Users and clicks are two different metrics. In order to track your SEO progress, there are a few key metrics you should pay attention to. As you know the number of users who visit your site is important because it gives you an idea of how many people are actually seeing your content. The second one you should pay attention to is the number of clicks on your links, because it shows you how engaged users are with your content. Finally, you should also track the bounce rate of your site, this metric measures how long users stay on your site before leaving. A high bounce rate indicates your landing experience is not meeting your visitor's expectations.

    I hope that helps!

    Regards,
    Adam

That stuff generally doesn't matter to business owners. What you really should be tracking and focusing on in Google Analytics is conversions. Sales and/or leads generated. That's what they care about.

Most of this means little to nothing to clients, especially local business clients. Most clients at the end of the day are shooting for sales.

The important metrics in that case are:
    • Impressions
    • Organic Sessions
    • Conversions

If you want to get more in-depth, hop into Search Console and try to see what pages are ranking best and for what searches.

These are the important ones however there are many others, such as: type of devices, geography, browsers, conversions etc.
