Business on domain for almost a decade.... but have a better domain name for seo?

I've got a business that we've had up and running for almost a decade.

Im beating my competitors handily in organic rankings.....

The current domain name has a generic keyword for what we sell, but i've secured a much better one.

My question is whether I should redirect from the better domain name to the old domain where the site is hosted...

...or should I host under the new domain and redirect traffic from the old domain to the better domain name where the site would be hosted?

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you've been running under a name for nearly ten years and ranking well, I'd leave it at that.

You might as well hang on to the new name - and redirect it if you want - but otherwise, just carry on with what you're doing.

I would not change the domain name of a successful site ....you could use the new domain for an info/etc site to attract leads to feed INTO the main (old) domain. Or start a new site with the new domain and compete with your old domain - more 'buy links', more sales.

Some will tell you - 'no problem - you can redirect'....but that is a solution to use when you HAVE to - and it is not without problems. If your site is ranking well, don't mess with it (my opinion)....especially not just to have a 'better name'.

Names play almost zero role in rankings inside of Google. They have a little bit of an impact in Bing and DDG, but nobody uses those.

I would never change a domain unless it was for branding purposes.

      Thanks for all the info.

Just had visions of bigger better more with a domain name that held more of my direct keywords.

If you read the OP you will see this person is asking whether they should REPLACE a 10 yr old domain with a new one that 'sounds better'.

The answer is 'of course not'.

I would absolutely stick with a successful domain rather than changing it

People try very hard to build a successful business website and make good revenues from it.
If I had a 10-year-old domain that is even ranking and making a good profit I would definitely get stuck to the main domain. Many people say it does not affect your business but it does have a good position in the eyes of Google. If you redirect it or change it, it may affect your SEO ranking.
You can do one thing, rather than replacing the domain you can open another website and first try to make good revenue from it and then make your decision.

Ideally, don't try to change the domain which you have been using for almost a decade because your old domain will be having a good reputation in google/search engines eyes. If you try to change or redirect, it may affect your SEO ranking. You can use the new domain for info and redirect traffic to the old domain however if your long-term future goals are clear and new domain is shorter and easy to remember then perhaps you can.
