Heya,

I'm relatively new to SEO and recently joined a firm with a small SEO team. We do local posting and social media engagement for traffic and online presence. The company provide engineering services in the USA; I will only go into a few details -

1. We have a dedicated website.
2. We drive traffic from minimum off-page activities.
3. Our primary lead generation is from references and offline marketing.

Now my question is - the website contains pages for all the services we provide, say The MAIN PARENT PAGES; each main page has sister pages targeted at different locations in the USA. For example:
Main Page: XYZ Service
Sister Pages: XYZ Service New York, XYZ Service Virginia, and so on.

There are 250 sister pages around six primary service categories spread across the main pages. So a total of 1000 pages with the same content with only slight keyword variation.

What should I define as canonical for sister pages? The main page? Or the sister page itself? Currently, there is no set canonical on the sister page, and the Google Search Console has indexed around 5% of sister pages, with over 95% of pages defined as detected but not indexed.

Please suggest to me what I should do next.

Regards.

Ignore this advice. It's dumb. You don't have to worry about crawl rate on such a small site.

You want to self-canonicalize those pages or else they are not going to show up in the searches you want.

But doesn't the same content on every sister page will lead to high duplicates and result in no index? Or should I canonicalize important city pages only? With slightly different content on each page?

[Moderator edit: no links - you've described the issue]

      No.

If you canonicalize Page A to Page B, you are telling search engines not to show Page A in search results and instead to show Page B.

Page A is not going to show up for searches related to City A because you canonicalized it to a different page. Page B is not going to show up for searches related to City A either because it is optimized for City B.

If you are going to do this, make them all self-canonicalized.

Google updates its content value policies so rather than having multiple pages with the same information keep it on fewer pages with the right information.

You need canonical tags for each page because these pages are identical and Google indexes the original page which it feels is the original version. Canonical tags can help index them.

We have a similar site structure and self-canonicalized the pages.
