    Maybe I am not understanding the question, but a membership requires a password to view the content. If that is the case, Google can never "see" the content on the page. Also, who is going to link to content that their site visitors cannot view without a membership?

    Seems like you would not only have a tough time getting links, but because Google cannot access the content on the linked-to page, yes, it is worthless trying to create links to it.

    The solution is to put a certain amount of public content on the page that generally explains the essence of the page but the real meat of the page is hidden inside a members-only frame (or separate page) that can only be accessed by clicking on a "view more" link that asks for a password and provides a sign-up link for those without a membership.

    Anything that is public can help. But those pages which are under exclusive membership will not help.


    Those are private pages for their members. So, the site owner will not allow other than their members to access and most certainly not Google.


    Hence, links from those pages are pretty useless.


    Although you can feel good about this thinking that people in the private groups are also talking about your pages.
