dears, i am updating my site structure tree following Google taxonomy list, therefore I need to create new categories/sub-categories for our products, while linking the products to their corresponding new categories, the issue now is how to delete the old categories without hurting seo, i was thinking that maybe shopify handle the redirection automatically, or maybe i should point/redirect manually every old-category/product to new-category product manually, or simply submit new site map while doing nothing else. which practice is the best for seo in this case vs pros and cons? thanks

301-redirect the old category URLs to the new ones. I don't think Shopify is going to handle this particular situation automatically. You will need to do it manually.

Although submitting a new site map should definitely be done, that won't take care of any rankings issues. Those new URLs will be seen as new pages if you do not 301 to them and they'll have to be crawled and evaluated over time by Google just like any new page would.

When you delete categories, you might be removing content that was indexed by search engines. This can result in a loss of rankings and organic traffic if the deleted categories had valuable and relevant content.
