Don't Be Evil: Google Bans Scammy Advertisers From Network

Anyone else see this? Just came across it, seem to be targeting CPA stuff/forced continuity.

I think all marketers are "liars" in a way.Your job is to convince the customer that they cannot live without your product. If you play by the rules, being ethical, you have nothing to worry about.

There's different levels, though, aren't there? If you only produce or promote quality products, that's one thing. Promoting a substandard product, or a "make money online" scheme that you've never tested, or a product that keeps billing people month after month and makes it impossible to cancel - is flat out wrong, any way you look at it.

Don't tar us all with that brush.

There is actually a line between ethical marketing and lying to try and make a sale.

Any decent marketer will be coming from a position where they actually believe selling someone their product will help them and deliver more value than is being asked for in money.

But there are a lot of people who will lie and make up anything in order to make a sale - regardless of any consideration of the buyer. We're just not all like that....

Some people think that being ethical goes against effective marketing but it's really just a choice.

    Hmm...

Why doesn't Google just disallow certain types of campaigns then? We all know these "miracle drugs" don't work, so if G wants to really make things messy they can just remove landing pages directed to those type of offers.

But now, who's to say that the buyers of these products don't actually "benefit" (or believe they are benefiting from it) after they purchase.

If a man buys the product, and believes it's working, and is actually happy, is it wrong if it doesn't work like advertised?

OMG -Are you really saying that selling something that doesn't do what you say is right, as long as the person thinks it will?

Hey - you could save the world a lot of money on drug development. Just make sugar cubes and tell everyone it cures whatever they have.

      • Yep Google has confirmed that they are starting to ban accounts that promote rebills and shady free trial offers.

In the past they banned certain campaigns or sites, but now they are banning entire accounts and preventing new ones from being created.

2 stories about it below, plus a quote from a Google rep.

Google AdWords To Step Up Account Disabling & Improve Communication Process

Get Ready, Here Come More Google AdWords Account Bans

From Adwords Advisor a Google employee

"Unfortunately, some online advertisers continue to promote services and websites that do not help, and in some cases could harm, our users. For instance, these advertisers may offer free services that bait users into accepting hidden fees... Regardless of the practice, these types of campaigns do not benefit our users and we therefore take steps to enforce our policies and prevent such advertisers from running ads through our systems...

Therefore, we're being stricter with advertisers who deliver a bad user experience by permanently disabling AdWords accounts that engage in prohibited behavior...

We believe this new process of permanently disabling accounts will markedly improve the overall experience of our users, advertisers and publishers."

Yea, well, Google talk a good game about user experience but I believe that their bottom line is money.

I've seen them pick one some who just seem naive and not others who look downright shady and litter results with the same **** berry and other BS offers.

Free trial offers are not bad. That's like saying my steak knife is bad because some people have stabbed others with steak knives before.

They wold have to look at each trial offer and make sure that the terms are clearly laid out before saying "You're outta here because you are promoting a free trial offer"

I guess in Google land you are guilty until proven innocent.

Besides, if they were about user experience they wouldn't have removed the search button form their search page :p Useless, dumb, stupid and pointless idea unless I'm just not privy to some weird ulterior motive they have like some sort of social experiment or something.

Well, duh! Google is not a charitable organization.

Free trial offers? Would that be the ones that get the credit card number by requiring you to pay "only for shipping" and hide the fine print about "you will be rebilled again and again"?

Smart move by google as the FTC is looking closely at those "freebies" these days because of the huge number of customer complaints. Maybe Big G is just positioning itself for what's to come.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Amen to that.. here is a scenario:
If the general public starts to doubt the legitimacy of sponsored links and quits clicking, google's main income stream dries up. "User Experience" is only important in so far as it effects their bottom line. I think it is obvious to everyone that their advertisements needed cleaning up. It is unfortunate that some innocent people will get screwed, but that is the way it goes from time to time.

I don't understand why Microsoft or Yahoo has not made a dent in Google's dominance for adsense or adwords. I have moved my ppc to Yahoo exclusively. Maybe they will both merge sometime.

then ALSO please ban the CPA networks which HEAVILY, HEAVILY promote all that ****. Keyword: Power Cleanse etc... scams.

"Our highest converting product - promote it NOW!"

Because the "dumb" marketer sees it, think "wow, great. Look at those network earnings". Turns out most of it are scams.
