Yes buliding (quality) backlinks to web 2.0 properties will further help increase SERP position. As will building backlinks to non web 2.0 properties (aka, your own websites).

Thing is when you use existing web 2.0 properties (like article directories) you already have a "reputation" so to speak in google's eyes because the page has an existing page rank. This makes it easy to dominate "low-medium" competition words.

Well heck yeah it will help! But you need to pick good keywords to write about so that when you rank from the link building, you get good traffic to those articles. Otherwise it's kinda pointless.

Completely agree. Your time should be spent on keywords you can rank for first and foremost. Then worry about backlinks

Yes, I'm trying to rank for a keyphrase and that keyphrase is in the eza article and it links back to my site.

So, using Angela's links- Does this help to point them to the article (which points to my site)?

But that's not your page; that's EZA's page. I'm sure they'll be really grateful that you're spending your money/effort/time to bring them traffic!

It's true that some of the traffic you get there will read your article all the way through, not be distracted by any of the Adsense promotions all over the page, and even click your link in the author's resource-box and arrive at your site. But why not just promote your own site in the first place, instead of someone else's? I'm not trying to suggest that backlinking to EZA articles is necessarily wrong, and to be honest I sometimes do it myself. But it should be more or less an afterthought to promoting your own site, you know?
Hmm... I guess I was under the impression that link juice would flow from the backlinks I built to the eza article and on to my website though the anchor text at the bottom of the article.

Hey Thanks Craig, Elexa and Zeus!

I was hoping that building backlinks to the EZA article with a keyword phrase would increase the page position of "My Website" because of the anchor text at the bottom of the article that links to my site.

      Does that make sense?

Instead of building backlinks to your article build them to your site. You'll get more value out of it this way. Unless your doing a simple bookmarking service you can do for free then by all means backlink your article like that it will help get more people to read your article and help out that way.

Building backlinks to an article or building backlinks to your site doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. You should build backlinks to both and to a number of other places as well. Take up as many spots on page one of Google as you can.

Yes, back links have great value to your sites. Just remember the key aspect of back links is to use your target keywords as anchor text.

A lot of the places that you can put your backlink will let you put a link to both the article and the money site. Use EZA for the easier to rank but less traffic style keywords to get some traffic from good Google positioning - with some backlinks these articles are very powerful.
