  • LSI is a mathematical process for analyzing text (e.g. on websites). The LSI process is meant to automatically find the important, content-relevant words in texts. This way, LSI can be used to find pages with similar content, even if each of the pages is completely unique.

As for what this means to us as Internet marketers, I've read some different opinions on this. Most commonly, it seems that Google is using LSI to determine the richness of content on pages.

Basically, Google not only looks at separate keywords, but also at how many related keywords there are on the same page.

For example, if a page has "Goldfish bowl" as it's title and throughout the text, "Goldfish bowl" is constantly repeated but there are no related terms, Google will determine that this is a "thin" site that's simply stuffed with one keywords.
However, if it also finds other keywords related to "Goldfish bowl" (i.e. aquarium, other fish names, fish-food, glass bowl,...), it will be more likely to determine that this is a valuable page with actual content.

I don't know if this is really true or not, though. I do know that at least one person is offering a course on how to make pages "LSI friendly" and of course claims that this is the secret to good page rankings. Haven't tested it, though.

    • If you want to find LSI keywords, just go to Google keyword tool and type in your main keyword. The list Google comes up with is LSI keywords sorted by importense.
Sprinkel these words on your site and it will hopefully improve your index in Google :-)
  • LSI happens naturally if you write an article as you would if you were going to publish it in a magazine. You wouldn't keyword stuff in a magazine and that's basically the just behind lsi, that there is a natural occurrence of related words to any subject.

It's also felt that how you structure your site, typically a physical or virtual silo is optimal for enjoying all the LSI goodness that can be had.

LSI is very complicated and there are a lot of SEO's CLAIMING to fully understand it.

It's also computationally expensive so there is some argument over how much the search engines can really do with it.

Write naturally. Get links. Repeat. Do those three and you can forget all about LSI because you'll have it covered.

Don't worry about chasing the LSI unicorn.

    • Here's a simple example.

If you write an article about dogs you may find you have to repeat the word "dog" or "dogs" over and over to explain the focus of the article.

Instead of using "dog" constantly, you can vary that word with:

      canine
      pup
      pooch
      puppy
      best friend
      pet
      animal

Google understands the keyword and the articles will read better, to.

  • LSI is building relevance between words and phrases. The object is to try and predict what you are searching for rather than the words you searched for.
